Joel Shapiro, a senior Music Education major from Albany, NY, took first place at the American Choral Directors Association of Pennsylvania Undergraduate Conducting Competition in October. Shapiro was one of five contestants from Pennsylvania colleges and universities nominated by their choral conducting teachers. He studies choral conducting with Dr. Mitos Andaya and instrumental conducting with Dr. Emily Threinen.

This is the second consecutive year that a Temple student has won this statewide competition; JoAnn Mollo won the event in 2012. As part of this year's competition, Shaprio conducted and rehearsed the Hempfield High School Singers, received a conducting clinic with Dr. Christopher Kiver, Director of Choral Activities at Penn State University, and won a $200 cash prize for his first-place finish.
