Early Childhood through Teens

CREATIVE MOVEMENT

(Ages 3 and 4 years, for children only)

All dance classes are offered in partnership with Friends Select School and take place at its location at 17th and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia

The class introduces children to the basic principles of dance based on the techniques of Rudolph Laban and guides them through a series of movement-exploring games, songs and improvisations that enhance and develop each child’s movement ability.These experiences improve the child’s rhythm, flexibility and endurance and create a foundation for formal dance training.

MUSIC & MOVEMENT

(Ages 5 to 7 years, children only)

This course is a fun and highly physical program designed to aid the student in understanding rhythm. It introduces the child to the basic principles of music using songs, movement explorations and movement games. Rhythmic timing and rhythmic structure are presented to the student, first using percussion instruments and/or the singing voice and then transferring the rhythms to one or more body parts. Gradually the student learns to understand and process rhythm using the whole body as an instrument.

MODERN DANCE*

(Ages 8 through Teens)

All dance classes are offered in partnership with Friends Select School and take place at its location at 17th and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia

Taught by Victoria McGuigan, Katherine Paulson

Exciting and fun, this course introduces the basic principles of modern dance with an emphasis on alignment, strength, flexibility and coordination. Classes include elements of jazz dance, hip hop and ballet. Students perform in class to their favorite contemporary music. Whether you are a beginner or have had prior dance experience, this course will enhance the dancer in you. Proper dance attire required: tights and leotard or loose fitting pants and leotard.

BALLET TECHNIQUE

(Pre-teens and Teens)

All dance classes are offered in partnership with Friends Select School and take place at its location at 17th and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia

Taught by Victoria McGuigan

Designed for the beginning to intermediate level student, this course introduces and expands on the basic principles of ballet. Each class includes a thorough barre warm-up, center floor adagio and petite allegro, and across the floor grande allegro work. Dancers will gradually gain strength, flexibility and technical precision as a result of their work in this course. This class is a wonderful partner to our Modern Dance program and is recommended for modern dancers age 10 and up, as well as for dancers not enrolled in Modern Dance. Proper attire required: ballet slippers, tights & leotard or dance pants and leotard.
