EARLY CHILDHOOD
MUSIC FOUNDATIONS
(Infants through 6 years
accompanied by caregiver)
Dr.
Beth Bolton, Curriculum Director
Taught
by Holley Haynes, and Diego Maugeri, Anna Preston,
This nationally recognized program develops the very young child's potential in music and helps parents recognize and nurture their child's music making. The program provides a carefully planned sequence of music learning for children who are accompanied by parents or caregivers and uses the natural human inclination for chanting, singing and movement as the first steps in understanding melody, rhythm, and improvisation. Through interactive music making with parents and teachers, children discover the body as the primary music instrument.
Infant (up to 18 months):
In infant classes, parents and children experience music by participating in gentle flowing and rhythmic movement activities. Infants’ spontaneous vocal responses, or babble, are viewed as the first attempts at music making and are incorporated into songs and chants. In class children will experiment with manipulatives (egg shakers, scarves, and beanbags) to help stimulate curiosity and foster body coordination.
Toddler (18 to 36 months):
Toddler classes are designed around children’s increasing independence and desire to explore and play. Locomotor movement activities allow children to explore their music environment. Teachers will incorporate the children’s spontaneous movement and vocal explorations into classroom songs and chants. Additional manipulatives (co-operband, parachute, and gathering drum) provide opportunities for cooperative group movement and music making.
Pre-School (3 and 4 years):
Children’s love for imaginative play is incorporated into informal structured locomotor and discrete movement activities that accompany songs and chants. Parents and teachers participate alongside children in partner games during which children can share ideas for singing, chanting, and moving. Children explore simple percussion instruments and manipulatives through independent and cooperative music making. Because children at this age have a natural curiosity about symbol systems and are learning to recognize and pre-read letters, numbers, and words, music notation is featured to provide children with a readiness to read notation.
Primary (5 and 6 years):
Children in the primary class will enjoy movement activities such as body percussion, folk dances, and mirroring activities, and will learn how those activities can be connected to musical content. Singing, chanting, and movement experiences will be used to guide
notation readiness and instrument exploration. Children will engage in imaginative play to build their notation reading and audiation skills. Intentional music making activities will feature singing, chanting, and playing xylophones, metallophones, and simple percussion instruments.

BASIC MUSICIANSHIP
(Pre-teens and Teens)
Taught
by Veronika Zhmeniak
Offered
in three progressive levels, the goal of this course is to develop
musicianship by integrating aural, written, vocal, and tactile skills.
This is accomplished mainly by using movable Do solfege
to help students make the connection etween musical notation and
sound.
Musicianship
I: An
introduction to basic musical concepts, including rhythm, intervals,
and chords, through ear-training, solfege, sight-singing, and musical
dictation. Students learn to recognize the following, aurally and
visually: major and minor scales and chords as well as all the intervals within the major
scale.
Musicianship
II: Exploration of music fundamentals leading to an understanding
of the practical application of intervals and chords. Students learn
to hear and recognize the following: isolated intervals (outside the
context of the major scale); basic chords in root position (I, IV,
V); and simple chord progressions. Skills developed include sight-singing
and taking dictation of more complex melodies and simple chord progressions.
In addition, students demonstrate ability to apply knowledge of musical
materials learned by writing short compositions.
Musicianship
III: An
in-depth integration of all musical elements presented in the two
previous levels, with an introduction to more advanced concepts, analysis,
and composition. Students explore important differences between musical
styles and analyze pieces of music from their own performance repertoire.
Other skills developed include hearing and visually recognizing diminished,
augmented and V7 chords, as well as chord inversions (including V7
chords and their resolutions), and tonic expansions.
