Spring 2009

Dear Music Prep Friends:

A proverb I recently encountered stated; “Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but sometimes, playing a poor hand well.”

I think that we all can agree that recent economic conditions constitute a “poor hand” for most of us, individually and collectively. As the nation and state struggle to meet these challenges, no entity is spared. We must find ways to “play this poor hand well’.

An interesting observation made by some of our colleagues at the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, suggests that in uncertain and difficult times, maintaining engagement in the arts is not only a way to escape gloomy realities, but also retains a high value within our lists of priorities. Staying connected to that which has value gets us through the difficult times, and heightens our enjoyment of the good times.

Maintaining quality instruction and performances for our children allows them to move forward in any climate. And recent studies continue to find strong correlation of arts learning, particularly music, to other areas of positive cognitive and social growth. One recently released study by a previous skeptic finds special advantages in the length of study: Practicing a Musical Instrument in Childhood is Associated with Enhanced Verbal Ability and Nonverbal Reasoning. While there are many legitimate debates about the extra-musical advantages of study, all seem to agree that long term, consistent commitment yields the greatest benefits.

We hope that you will continue to find Music Prep to be your source of strength and value in carrying you and your family through good and difficult times.
