2009-10
Clare Semes, concertmaster of the Youth Chamber Orchestra and student of Choong-Jin Chang, is the first place winner of the Newark Symphony Orchestra competition. Clare is also a finalist in the YoungArts Program of the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts and will attend the finals in Florida January 10-17. Clare is a recipient of the Starling Scholarship at Temple Music Prep.
Nathan Watts, cellist in the Youth Chamber Orchestra, is the first place winner in the Instrumental Division of the Kennett Symphony Competition.
Violinist, Arianna Schickel, a member of the Youth Chamber Orchestra, won second place winner in the Instrumental Division of the Kennett Symphony Competition.
Katherine Baloff, violin member of the Youth Chamber Orchestra, was named Concertmaster of the New Jersey All State Orchestra. Katherine was also named Concertmaster of the South Jersey Regional State Orchestra competition.
Bradley Berman, cellist in the Youth Chamber Orchestra, is the first place winner in the Senior Division of the Landsdowne Symphony Competition and the Tri-County Youth Festival Competition. Bradley is also a recipient of the 2009/2010 Ambler Symphony Menges Scholarship Award and will appear as a soloist with the Ambler Symphony during their 2009/2010 season.
Austin Berman, violin student of Ellen dePasquale, is a recipient of the 2009/2010 Ambler Symphony Menges Scholarship Award. He will appear as a soloist with the Ambler Symphony during their 2009/2010 season. Austin is also a recipient of a Starling Scholarship at Temple Music Prep.

From the Top, the non-profit organization best known for its NPR and PBS programs featuring America's best young classical musicians, has awarded 12-year-old cellist Sangbin (Bihn) Park from Haverford, PA with a $10,000 Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award. He will be heard on a broadcast of From the Top WRTI 90.1 FM at 2 pm Sunday, September 27. Bihn is a student of Metta Watts.
Violinists Maria Semes, Clare Semes, Amy Semes, Carolyn Semes will perform with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor, Gao Jian on
Sept. 6, 2009 at 10:30 at the Shanghai Concert Hall. The program will include Ravel's Tzigane, Saint-Saens' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28, Gipsy Airs, Op. 20 by Sarasate and Bach's Double Violin Concerto in D minor BWV 1043. All four sisters are students of Choong-Jin Chang through Music Prep. Clare and Amy are current recipients of the Dorothy Richard Starling Scholarship at Temple Music Prep. Maria, an alumna of Music Prep, was a former recipient of the Starling Scholarship.
Elena Urioste, former concertmaster of the YCO, is one of three recipients of the prestigious London Music Masters Awards. As part of this 3-year award, Ms. Urioste will make her Wigmore Hall debut on Tuesday October 20th, 2009, performing works by Schubert, Prokofiev, and Hubay.
2008-09
Jason Vassiliou recently won the 2009 Delaware Valley Philharmonic Symphony's Musical Composition Competition. An orchestrated version of a quartet he composed was played by the Symphony on March 28, 2009. Jason is a violin student of Julian Meyer.
Anastasia Falasca finished first place in the West Chester University Annual Piano Competition and performs on April 19, 2009 at the Gates Recital Hall. Anastasia is a Starling Scholarship recipient at Temple Music Prep studying violin with Kim Fisher and participates in the Center for Gifted Young Musician's Youth Chamber Orchestra.
Cellist, Bihn Park, a student of Metta Watts, won first place in the 2008-09 Pottstown Symphony Competition. Bihn was also the recent winner of the Junior Division of the 2008 PADESTA Solo Competition.
Daniel Kim, violin, took second place in the Kennett Symphony Competition's Junior Division. Daniel is a student of Julian Meyer and the recipient of a Starling Scholarship at Temple Music Prep.
Jamie (Yerim) Lee, violin (student of Richard Amoroso and Starling Scholarship at Temple Music Prep recipient) performed with the Temple University Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, February 15, 2009 as the Temple Music Prep competition winner.
Starling Scholarship violinist, Mary Loftus, was a semi-finalist in the Sphinx Competition for the second year in a row. Mary studies violin with Yumi Ninomiya Scott.
Clare Semes, co-concertmaster of the Youth Chamber Orchestra and recipient of the Starling Scholarship at Temple Music Prep, recently won second place in the Schmidbauer International Young Artists Competition. She
was also a finalist in in the Blount Slawson Competition in Alabama during January. Clare studies violin with Choong-Jin Chang.
Clarinetist, Walter Park was chosen to be one of eight musicians for the All Eastern Wind Ensemble this year as a result of last year's PA All-State auditions. Walter is a student of Rie Suzuki.
Also a student of Rie Suzuki, Christian Yoon received 10th place in this year's All-Eastern Wind Ensemble, serving as the second alternate of the clarinet section.
Violinist, Hannah Lam is the winner of the age 11 and under Division of the 2008 ASTA/NJ Solo Competition and was invited to perform in a winners recital at Kean University on February 1. She will also perform as a soloist with the Ambler Symphony Orchestra this season. Hannah is a student of Hirono Oka and a recipient of the Starling Scholarship at Temple Music Prep.
Jack Saint Clair, a saxophone student of Jason O'Mara and theory student of Ben Blazer in the Community Music Scholars Program, was the
2008 First Place Winner in DOWNBEAT's 31st Annual Student Music Awards in the "Original Song" category for his composition, "On a Blue Note." Jack's faculty advisor at the
J.R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School, Kim Neu, had submitted his composition in the junior high school division. The announcement appeared in the June 2008 issue of Downbeat Magazine.

Helenmarie Vassiliou, violin, was a second place winner at the Tri-County Concerts Association Youth Festival Competition in the spring of 2008. She is also a soloist with the Ocean City Pops in July 2008. Last year she soloed with Ambler Symphony as a winner of the Menges Scholarship Competition and also received an honorable mention in the 2007 Lansdowne Symphony Concerto Competition. Helenmarie is a student of Hirono Oka.

2007-08
Piano student, Thao Nguyen, won a gold medal for the Golden Key Music Festival Competition for 2007-2008 and performs a work by Heitor Villa Lobos on June 1st at Cabrini College. In addition, Thao and fellow piano student, Quincy Wolfson received high honors at the Philadelphia Music Teachers National Association Competition. Both are piano students of Joao Paulo Casarotti.
Grace Ju, violin, recently won first place at both the Tri-County and Ambler Symphony Competitions. Grace is a recipient of the Starling Scholarship at Temple Music Prep studying with Kimberly Fisher .
A member of Baroque Players in the Center for Gifted Young Musicians, Zachary Mowitz, cellist, was selected to perform in the Handler Master Class series with Peter Wiley on March 3 at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades.

This year's Sphinx Competition was won by Temple Music Prep alumna, Elena Urioste (violin) in the Senior Division. In the Junior Division, Steven Laraia (viola) took Second Place and Mary Loftus (violin) received the Junior Achievement Award as one of the semi-finalists. Steven studies viola with
Che-Hung Chen and Mary is a violin student of Yumi Ninomiya Scott.
Former concert master of Music Prep's Youth Chamber Orchestra , Amy Lee, has recently been named Associate Concert Master of the Cleveland Orchestra.
Three clarinet students of Rie Suzuki, 11th graders Walter Park and Christian Yoon, and 10th graders, Brian Lee placed in the top 10 seats for the PMEA District Band/Orchestra auditions in District 11 with Walter taking first place. All three clarinetists will proceed to the PA Regional Auditions in January 2008.
As winner of the 2007-08 Youth Orchestra of Bucks County Concerto Competition, Joshua Hanson , cello, performed Saint-Saëns' Concerto No. 1 in a minor with the Youth Orchestra in November. Joshua is a student of Orlando Cole and Metta Watts and is a member of the Youth Chamber Orchestra at Temple Music Prep.
Natalie Kress, a first violinist in Music Prep's Youth Chamber Orchestra was the third place winner of the 2007 Kennett Symphony Instrumental Competition.
Young pianist, Anna Bates, won first prize at the National Bob Jones University High School Competition in Greensville, SC. A student of Sandrine Erdely-Sayo, Anna was one of 75 competitors nationwide.
Music Prep students, Maria, Clare, Carolyn and Amy Semes, performed on the Boyer's concert series, First Tuesdays @ Noon on October 2 at the Learning Center at the Temple Ambler Campus.
2006-07
A member of the Youth Chamber Orchestra, Sarah Rommel, cello, was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music and will begin her studies in Fall 2007.
Katherine Loboda, a piano student of Luba Agranovsky was the first place winner at the Golden Key Music Festival. As winner, Katherine performed at Carnegie Hall on May 25, 2007.
Lauren and Jordan Blackwell particpated in a Greater Philadelphia Suzuki Association sponsored recital at the Franklin Institute on May 12, 2007. Both children are students of Caroline Goberman.
Music Prep soloists, Fabiola Kim, violin, Julia Sheriff, piano and the Youth Chamber Orchestra are to be featured on the "From the Top" national radio show. Temple Music Prep clarinetists, Christian Yoon and Walter Park (both grade 10), after winning the Pennsylvania District auditions, have advanced to the Regional and State Band and Orchestra. Christian Yoon advanced to the PA Regional Band. Walter Park was chosen principal principal clarinetist for both the PA Regional Band and Orchestra, as well as principal for the PA All State Orchestra. Both are students of Dr. Rie Suzuki.
The Community Music Scholars Program Jazz Orchestra was
invited to participate in the "Essentially Ellington" Eastern
Regional High School Jazz Band Festival. The festival was
held at the main campus of Temple University on Thursday,
March 8, 2007. Nine regional bands participated in the
event, having an opportunity to play and be evaluated by such
Jazz greats as Bill Cunliffe, Terell Stafford, Dick Oatts and
others. The event was co-sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center.
Anne Ku, violin student of Jason DePue and Julia Sheriff, piano student of Dr. Charles Abramovic were finalists in the Junior Division of the 2006-07 Philadelphia Orchestra Greenfield Competition.
Temple Music Prep was recently awarded a grant from the
Greenfield Foundation to support the Modern Dance class of
the Community Music Scholars Program. The Modern Dance class,
open to Philadelphia school children ages 8-12, will be
offered on the Main Campus of Temple University in fall 2007.
Recruitment for this program will focus on the neigborhoods
and schools in the North Philadelphia area.
Jason Karlyn of the Youth Chamber Orchestra, was principal violist in the 2007 All-Eastern-Honors Orchestra in Hartford, CT. This ensemble is comprised of students selected from their All-State orchestras from Maine to Maryland. Jason competed against 21 other violists at the festival to earn first chair. Jason is a student of Che-Hung Chen.
Jenny Zhong, a piano student of Caroline Goberman, has been awarded a music scholarship to Hallahan High School.
A member of the Center for Gifted Young Musicians' Baroque Players and its principle second violinist, Arianna Schickle is the winner of the Ambler Symphony Orchestra's Menges Scholarship for 2006-07. As winner, Arianna will perform Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole with the Ambler Symphony on February 25 at the Upper Dublin Lutheran Church.
This year's winner of the Temple University Music Prep Concerto Competition is Anne Ku, violin student of Jason DePue. Anne will be playing the Walton Violin Concerto with the Temple University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Biava this coming February 11, 2007 at Haverford School's Centennial Hall.
Three clarinet students of Rie Suzuki have recently won auditions for district honor bands/orchestras:Chelsea Hutchings (grade 9) for All South Jersey Concert Band; Christian Yoon (grade 10) for the Pennsylvania District 11 Band; and Walter Park (grade 10) as principal clarinet for the Pennsylvania District 11 Band/Orchestra.
Yerim Lee, violin student of Yumi Scott and member of the Youth Chamber Orchestra, became the 2006-07 winner of the Kennett Symphony Competition. She will be performing Paganini's Violin Concerto in d minor with the Kennett Symphony on June 14 and 16, 2007. Ms. Lee is also the recipient of a Starling Scholarship at Temple Music Prep.
In October, Julia Sheriff, piano student of Boyer College of Music and Dance faculty member, Charles Abramovic, won first place in the Cunningham Piano Young Artist Competition which was hosted by Temple University's WRTI. Along with a cash prize of $1,000.00, WRTI will broadcast Julia in a solo performance. A scheduled performance with the Estonia Piano Company will also follow. In November Julia was the first place winner in the Music Teachers National Association state senior piano competition. This qualifies her to compete in the regional competition in January 2007.
Robyn Bollinger, concert master of the Youth Chamber Orchestra, participated in a violin master class with Jennifer Koh at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, October 20, 2006. Robyn is a student of Soovin Kim.
Ruben Jeon, piano, former student of Prof. Harvey Wedeen through Temple Music Prep, earned a full four-year scholarship to Indiana University School of Music and will begin his studies there in Fall 2006.
Jean (Hyun Jin) Park, piano and former Temple Music Prep student of Prof. Harvey Wedeen, earned a full four-year scholarship to John Hopkins University. Jean will also attend the Peabody Institute of Music while completing her studies at Johns Hopkins U. Jean will begin her studies in pre-med in Fall 2006.
2005-06
Adriana Socoski, violin and Meredith Bates, cello, both members of the Youth Chamber Orchestra, were selected by audition to represent the United States of America at the Music Bridge in Tibet held by the China Zongheng Culture and Art. Meredith Bates is a student of Orlando Cole and Metta Watts. Adriana Socoski is a student of Yumi Ninomiya Scott and Yayoi Numazawa.
Adriana Socoski, violinist in the Youth Chamber Orchestra and student of Yumi Ninomiya Scott and Yayoi Numazawa, won the Concerto Competition of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Intermediate level. As winner she performed with the Festival of the Symphonic Youth Orchestra of the Americas in June 2005 conducted by Maestro Luis Biava. Other winnings include: first place, Atonement Bach Scholarship Competition; 1st place, PA Music Teacher National Assoc., Senior String Division; solo winner, Musical Arts Society Competition (C. Margaretta McHose Memorial scholarship); 2nd place winner, Maryland State Music Teacher Assoc. Chamber Music Competition and 3rd place, David R. Horiwitz Memorial Competition (for violin and piano duo).
A violist in the Youth Chamber Orchestra Temple Music Prep's Center for Gifted Young Musicians, Jason Karlyn, placed second at the 2006 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) All-State Music Festival and has been nominated for the All-Eastern Music Festival next year in Hartford, CT. He also soloed with the Ocean City Pops on August 6, 2006, playing the fourth movement of the Telemann Concerto in G Major. Jason is a student of Che-Hung Chen.
Young pianist, Rebekah Lee, won first prize at the Korean Music Association Competition in Philadelphia this past year. Rebekah studies with Sandrine Erdely-Sayo.
10 year old pianist, Sarah Kim, has been selected as a gold medal winner in the Golden Key Music Festival Competition. She will be performing at the Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall on May 13th. Sarah is a student of Dr. Elena Ayzenberg.

Walter Park, a clarinet student of Rie Suzuki, recently won the Tri-County Competition, senior division for winds. Walter will be performing the first movement of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto this May accompanied by his sister, Jean Park. A piano student of Harvey Wedeen, Jean Park won Third Place in the Tri-County Competition, senior division for piano.
A member of the Baroque Players, Anastasia Falasca, violin, has won several competitions this past year. As a violinist, she was the winner of the New Jersey Music Teachers' Award and the Battleground Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. Anastasia was also the first place winner of the West Chester University Piano Competition and the Young Pianists Competition of New Jersey. Anastasia was also the second place winner and a recipient of a scholarship from the Steinway Society for 2006.
Members of the Center for Gifted Young Musicians, cellists, Nathan Watts of Baroque Players and Zachary Mowitz of Classic Strings, have been chosen from a statewide audition to participate in a Master Class with cellist, Colin Carr on March 30 at 4:00 at the Thurnauer School of Music of JCC on the Palisades, Tenafy, NJ.
As a finalist of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra's 2006 Young Artists Competition, 16 year old Nicholas Bodnar, cello, will perform the first movement of the Dvorák Cello Concerto with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra on April 23, 2006 at 3:00 pm. Nicholas, a student of Orlando Cole, is principal cello in our Youth Chamber Orchestra.
Both gold and silver medals awarded by the Golden Key Music Festival Competition were won by Music Prep piano students: Nathanael Kim (10 yrs. old) and Ellim Kim (8 yrs. old), who study with Sandrine Erdely-Sayo and Sarah Kim (10yrs. old) who studies with Dr. Elena Ayzenberg. As gold medal winners, Nathanael and Sarah will perform at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on May 20, 2006 at 1:30 pm. Ellim, as the silver medalist, will perform at Merkin Concert Hall at the Elaine Kaufman Cultural Center on May 14, 2006 at 2:30 pm.
Mary Loftus, a first violinist in our Baroque Players Chamber Orchestra, was a finalist in the Children's Division of the 2006 Philadelphia Orchestra Greenfield Student Competition. Another member of that section, Anastasia Falasca, is the first place winner of the Philadelphia Biblical University Young Artist Competition. Anastasia will perform with the Philadelphia Biblical University Orchestra on April 7, 2006 at 7:30 pm.
Former concert master of the Youth Chamber Orchestra (2000 and 2001) and a graduate student of the Juilliard School, Joanna Frankel, has been selected the concert master of the Juilliard Centennial American Tour Orchestra this season. Beginning with a performance in Avery Fisher Hall, the tour will also include performances in Chicago, Dallas, Irvine, San Diego and Los Angeles.
The Semes Family, Maria, Clare, Amy and Carolyn, (violin) performed the Vivaldi Concerto for Four Violins with the Ocean City Pops in September and with the Olney Symphony in November 2005. Two of the sisters, Maria and Clare also performed solos with both the Ocean City Pops and the Olney Symphony. Maria and Amy, as the 2004-05 winners of the Ambler Symphony Competition, will perform as soloists with the symphony this January and February.
Trevor Williams, piano student of Prof. Harvey Wedeen, won the New Jersey Music Teachers Award in composition for the second time.
Grant Kot , cello and Justine Lamb-Budge, violin, are the winners of the Senior and Junior Divisions, respectively, of the Tri-County Concerts Association 2005 Competition. Grant is a student of Orlando Cole and Metta Watts, and Justine is a student of Kimberly Fisher. Both students are members of the Youth Chamber Orchestra.
Nicholas Bodnar, cello, a student of Orlando Cole is the 2005 winner of the Delaware County Philharmonic Competition. Nicholas also holds the Orlando Cole Principle Cello Chair in the Youth Chamber Orchestra.
Selected for a live performance of the hit Public Radio International Show FROM THE TOP at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, students Robyn Bollinger, violin and Nicholas Bodnar, cello, and an ensemble featuring 9 of the Temple Music Prep Starling Scholarship winners along with performers from Settlement School of Music were heard on Temple's radio station, WRTI-90.1 FM on September 10, 2005 at 12:30 PM. The show, hosted by Christopher O'Riley, was presented by The Philadelphia Orchestra, Temple University Music Preparatory Division, Settlement Music School and WRTI-FM.
This September, four members of the Temple University Children's Choir performed, on stage with The Philadelphia Orchestra and Philadelphia Singers, Henri Dutilleux's poignant piece commemorating the end of World War II, The Shadows of Time. Our young singers included: Prateek Balasundaram, Benjamin Behrend, Judith Goltz and Amelia Wilber. Performances will take place in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts on September 22, 24, 27 and 28 at 8:00 PM and on Friday afternoon, September 23 at 2:00 PM.

Robyn Bollinger, violin was the winner of the Temple Music Prep Concerto Competition, 2004-05. As a winner, Robyn performed the solo in the Prokofiev Concerto No. 2 for Violin and Orchestra in g minor, Op. 63 with the Temple University Symphony under the direction fo Luis Biava on February 12, 2005 at Centennial Hall, the Haverford School. Robyn is a violin student of Kimberly Fisher.
Dorothy Ro, a violinist in the Youth Chamber Orchestra, won the Kennett Symphony Competition for 2004-05. As winner Dorothy will perform with the Kennett Symphony in June 2005 at Longwood Gardens. Dorothy is a student of Choong-Jin Chang.
Alex Grimes, a violist in the Youth Chamber Orchestra, won tfirst place in the Advanced violin/viola Division of the Bach Festival Metro Washington DC Area Competition. As winner he will perform in the Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in spring of 2005 as part of the American Fine Arts Festival.
Fourteen year old Christian Yoon, clarinet, was recently accepted into the Greater Philadelphia Honors Orchestra. She will be performing with the orchestra as part of their Festival to be held April 8-10 in Zielerville, PA. Christian is a student of Rie Suzuki Heubner.
Amy Fetherolf, violin student of Linda Cerone, appeared as soloist with The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall for five educational concerts and one family subscription concert in February 2005. She currently attends the Cleveland Institute of Music as a freshman and was a in the Temple Music Prep program for five years before moving to Florida. While at Temple Music Prep, Amy studied violin with Charles Parker .
Trever
Williams, a piano student of Prof. Harvey Wedeen,
has recently won first prize in the New Jersey Music Teachers Association
Competition in Composition in the Senior High Division and was asked
to perform his compositions at Westminster Choir College on November
20, 2004.
Bryan
Lee and Robyn Bollinger, both co-concert
masters of our Youth Chamber Orchestra, won first and second place,
respectively, of the Delaware Symphony's Student Soloist Competition for 2003-04.
As first place winner, Bryan will perform Prokofiev's 1st Violin
Concerto with the Delaware Symphony on December 11. Bryan is
a violin student of Soovin Kim and Choong-Jin Chang.
Robyn studies violin with Kimberly Fisher.
Walter
(Hyun Sung) Park, clarinet student of Rie Suzuki
recently won first place in the Philadelphia Sinfonia Concerto Competition.
Walter will perform Carl Maria von Weber's Clarinet Concerto No.
1, Op. 73 with the Philadelphia Sinfonia in Spring 2005.

Adriana
Socoski, violin student of Yumi Ninomiya Scott
and Yayoi Numazawa was the winner of the Hopf Chamber Competition
and the senior division of the Lancaster Women's Symphony Competition.
Adriana won 3rd place in the Atonement Bach Competition and also performed
for a private audience at the Kaplan Penthouse in Lincoln Center,
NY.
Anastasia
Vlahos, a violin student of Sylvia Ahramjian,
was the winner of the Delaware County Symphony Orchestra Competition
and performed with the orchestra in May 2004.
Violinists,
Leah Germer and Jessica Bowman,
attended the Pennsylvania Governors School of the Arts during the
summer 2004 session. Both Leah and Jessica are students of Sylvia
Ahramjian.
Mabel
Lee , a piano student of Liliya Maslov,
was awarded a full scholarship at both Temple University's Boyer College
of Music and Dance and Boston University. Ms. Lee begins her studies
with Prof. Harvy Wedeen at Temple's Boyer College of Music and Dance
in Fall 2004.
Robyn
Bollinger, Francesca dePasquale and Hansaem Lim, violinists
in the Youth Chamber Orchestra performed in a master class given by
Gil Shaham at the Kimmel Center in April 2004. All three students
are recipients of a Starling Scholarship at Temple Music Prep.
Francesca
dePasquale, a violin student of Hirono Oka ,
was the winner of the 2004 Bach Atonement Scholarship Competition.
This year Francesca has given solo performances at the Philadelphia
Academy of Music Ballroom, Temple University's Rock Hall and Villanova
University. She also appeared on a chamber music concert series at
Villanova University and at the Friends of Chamber Music in Reading,
PA.
Violinist,
Robyn Bollinger, was the winner of the Pottstown
Symphony Competition and runner-up in the Riverside Symphonia Competition
during the 2004. Robyn will make solo appearances with The Philadelphia
Orchestra, the Ocean City Pops, Olney Symphony Orchestra, Ambler Symphony
Orchestra, Warminster Symphony, DeKalb Symphony, Edison Arts Symphony
and the South Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra. She also performed in
a master class given by Pam Frank in Minnesota. Ms. Bollinger is a
student of Kim Fisher.
Clare
Semes, the recipient of a Starling Scholarship at Temple
Music Prep, won first place in the Musica 2000 Concerto Competition
and third place in the Tri-County Concerts Association Competition
during the 2003-04 season. She was a finalist in the Albert
M. Greenfield Student Competition. Clare also performed with the Ambler
Symphony, Hershey Symphony and Buck County Symphony Orchestras. She
is a violin student of Kim Fisher.
Oliver
Kot, violin student of Soovin Kim was a
soloist with the South Jersey Orchestra during the 2003-04 season.
Seventh
grader, Walter (Hyun Sung) Park, a clarinet student
of Rie Suzuki, recently won first place in the North
Penn Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and the Korean Musicians
Association of Philadelphia competition. Walter also won second prize
in the Junior Division of the
Tri-County
Youth Festival Competition.
The
Philadelphia Viola Society recently announced William Frampton
as the winner in the senior division of
the Philadelphia Viola Society Scholarship Competition. As winner,
he will be performing the second and third movements of the Bartok
concerto on that organization's May 2nd concert and receive a free
lesson with Hsin-Yun Huang in New York City. Will is a student of
Choong-Jin Chang and the principal violist in Temple
Music Prep's Youth Chamber Orchestra, 2003-04.
Bryan
Lee, violin, won First Place in the 2004 Lansdowne Symphony
Orchestra's Young Artist Competition this past March. He will perform
with the orchestra in December 2004. Bryan also won 2nd Place in the
Kingsville International Young Performers Competition in the Junior
Bowed Instrument Concerto Division. Bryan is a student of Choong-Jin
Chang and Soovin Kim and is the co-concertmaster
of the Youth Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Biava
in Music Prep's Center for Gifted Young Musicians.
Hansaem
Lim, violin, is the 2003-04 winner of the Temple Music Prep
Concerto Competition. Ms. Lim performed with the Temple University
Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Luis Biava on Sunday,
February 15, 2004 at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center. She is
also the co-concertmaster of the Music Prep's Youth Chamber Orchestra
in the Center for Gifted Young Musicians and a violin student of Yumi
Ninomiya Scott.
Robyn
Bollinger, violin, was the runner up for the 2003-04 Temple
Music Prep Concerto Competition. Robyn is a student of Kim
Fisher.

Music Prep, recently won the 2003 Sphinx Competition, Junior Division.
Her top honor in this national competition brings solo engagements
with, among others, the Detroit Symphony on Feb. 19, 2003; the Atlanta
Symphony on May 18, 2003; the Boston Pops on June 19, 2003; the Pittsburgh
Symphony on August 15, 2003; the Ocean City Pops on Sept. 21, 2003;
the Hartford Symphony on Dec. 4, 2003; the Baltimore Symphony on Jan.
7, 2004; the Cleveland Orchestra on Feb. 24, 2004; and the Omaha Symphony
on Feb. 26 and 27, 2004. She will begin her studies at the Curtis
Institute of Music in the fall of 2003.
Austin
Hartman's string quartet, "The Biava Quartet," recently won the
prestigious Naumberg Prize. Austin, the quartet's first violinist,
was a student of Choong-Jin Chang and the concertmaster
of the Youth Chamber Orchestra (1997-99) under the direction of Maestro
Luis Biava.
Adriana
Socoski, a student of Yumi Ninomiya Scott and
violinist in the Youth Chamber Orchestra, won first prize in both
the Lancaster Women's Symphony Association Junior Concerto Competition
and the 2003 Atonement Bach Scholarship Competition.

Kim, won the Temple University Concerto Competition. Bryan will
perform Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saëns
with the Temple University Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, February
23, 2003 at 3:00 PM at Centennial Hall, 450 W. Lancaster Avenue in
Haverford, PA.
During
t he 2002-03 season, the first three places in the Kennett Symphony
Competition were won by four Temple Music Prep students: Bryan
Lee, violin, winner (tied); Natalie Rudoi, violin, winner
(tied); Hansaem Lim, violin, 2nd place; Robyn Bollinger,
violin, 3rd place. All four students are recipients of a Dorothy Richard
Starling Foundation Scholarship at Temple Music Prep.
Shelley
Lian performed in a masterclass for Manuel
Barrueco (EMI recording artist, faculty at Peabody) on
the Verizon Hall stage at the Kimmel Center on Saturday,
November 30th. Shelley is a student of Ross Mann.
2001-02
Oliver
Kot, violin won first place in the Junior String Division of the
2001 Youth Music Festival of the Tri-County Concerts Association in
May 2001. Oliver was also a finalist in The Philadelphia Orchestra's
2001Albert Greenfield Student Competition in the Children's Division.
Oliver is a student of Estelle Kerner.
Jennifer
Haas, who was Concertmaster of the Youth Chamber Orchestra in
its first season, became a member of The Philadelphia Orchestra.
Alumna, Rebecca Ansel, was named Assistant Professor of Violin
at Ithaca College, NY.
Tunisia Hayward, a member of the Temple University Music Prep
Children's Choir, was the only member of the Children's Honor Choir
at the ACDA Eastern Division Conference this year to be selected as
a soloist. The performance was given on Saturday, February 16, 2002
at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, PA.
String
Quartet members, Bryan Lee, violin, Francesca dePasquale,
violin, Caitlin Gerrity, viola and Tiya Lee, cello,
from our Center for Gifted Young Musicians were invited to perform
the first movement of Beethoven's String Quartet, Op. 18, No. 1
in The Philadelphia Orchestra's Pre-Concert Family Adventure on stage
at the Kimmel Center (Perelman Theater) on Saturday, January 5, 2002
at 10:00 AM. Their coach is Charles Parker, Jr.
Elena Urioste is to perform on the national radio program,
From the Top. The show was pre-recorded in Corning, NY on November
30, 2001 in front of a live audience. Date for the airing will be

2000-01
The
2001 Festival of Young Musicians Gala Concert featured two talented
alumni of Temple's Center for Gifted Young Musicians. Elizabeth
Pitcairn, violinist, and Burchard Tang, violist, returned
to their shared musical roots to perform Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante
for Violin and Viola, K. 364, with the 2001 Youth Chamber Orchestra
under the direction of Luis Biava.
Jacqueline
Vilbert, a violin student of Sylvia Ahramjian was third chair
in the 2001 Pennsylvania All State Orchestra and concertmaster of
the Regional Orchestra.
Jason
Calloway, former cello student of Orlando Cole, made his Carnegie
Hall debut in 2001 ater winning a national competition sponsored by
Artists International Presentations, Inc.
1999-2000
Ellen
dePasquale, former student of the late Jascha Brodsky and concertmaster
of the Youth Chamber Orchestra in the enter for Gifted Young Musicians,
was appointed Associate Concertmaster for the Cleveland Orchestra
in Spring 1999. Previously she had been concertmaster of the Florida
Ochestra since October 1996.
Glenn
Fischbach, former cello student of Orlando Cole, is principal
cello of the Savannah (GA) Symphony
Austin
Hartman, former violin student of Yumi Scott and C.J. Chang and
concertmaster of the Center's Youth ChamberOrchestra under the direction
of Luis Biava, was the winner of the 1999 Stulberg International String
Competition. Now a student at the Cleveland Institute, he is founding
principal violinist of a student quartet named- respectively- The
Biava Quartet.
Matthew
Herren, former cello student of Orlando Cole and Metta Watts,
has appeared as chamber musician, recitalist and concerto soloist
throughout the United States and Europe. Most recently, he toured
as a member of the small ensemble in theaward wining theater piece,
The Silver River by Bright Sheng.
Jinny
Leem, former violin student of the late Jascha Brodsky, is concertmaster
for the Charlotte (NC) Symphony.
Eric
Owens, former voice student at Music Prep and the Esther Boyer
College of Music, was presented with the Career Advancement Award
($10,000) by the Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia at it's annual
dinner in May 2000.
May
Phang, former piano student of Harvey Wedeen, is assistant professor
of piano at Carroll College in Waukesha, WI.
Burchard
Tang, former viola student of C.J. Chang and principal viola in
the Center's Youth Chamber Orchestra was selected from a field of
160 viola applicants to join The Philadelphia Orchestra in September
1999.
