DEPARTMENT OF VOICE and OPERA

The Coaching Program and Temple Opera

Opera Production PhotoTemple University Opera provides unique opportunities for aspiring coaches. This program is designed to develop the necessary skills for becoming a professional coach by providing a blend of on-the-job training and individualized instruction. Each student in the program is a member of the opera music staff. This work includes playing and leading rehearsals, accompanying voice classes, opera classes, and recitals. Students also prepare and accompany scenes programs and serve the musical needs of the specific operas being prepared (continuo, pit piano, off-stage conducting, running surtitles, and so forth). Other duties may involve accompanying improvisation or movement classes.

This program is officially a ‘track’ of the Masters in Accompanying degree. Application must be made through the keyboard department. Auditions are usually early in the second semester. Students must apply for an audition.

The Degree Curriculum includes Piano Lessons, Recital Accompanying, Coaching Skills, and Opera History. There is also a language prerequisite involving French, Italian and German.
