Music Therapy
The Music Therapy Program offers an undergraduate program that prepares individuals for the professional practice of music therapy and provides an integrated sequence of academic coursework and supervised field training in nearby clinical institutions. Courses in applied music, theory, history, psychology, music therapy, and related clinical areas emphasize the importance of musicianship, self-understanding, and interpersonal skills. Successful completion of the degree program and internship qualifies the individual to apply for professional certification through the Certification Board for Music Therapy. An equivalency certification program for students with degrees in other fields is also available.
The master’s degree provides students already certified or registered in music therapy advanced training in clinical practice and research, integrating a variety of music therapy approaches and psycho-therapy theories. Personal styles of therapy are explored through experiential learning and supervised practica. Opportunities are given for specialized studies in developmental assessment, improvisation, ethics, and music therapy education and supervision. A master’s program for those with a music degree who wish to pursue music therapy certification is also available.
The doctorate in music therapy at Temple University is the first true Ph.D. in music therapy to be offered in the U.S. The Ph.D. program at Temple has music therapy as the major area of study, with its own core curriculum of advanced music therapy courses, supported by studies in research, music, and related health disciplines. The program has undergone extensive reviews and has been granted plan approval by the National Association of Schools of Music. Its primary educational goal is to prepare experienced clinicians to become competent scholars who will make significant contri-butions to research and theory in the field.
