Department of Music Education and Therapy:
Music Education

The Department of Music Education concentrates on developing the potential music educator so that he or she masters those competencies necessary for entry into the teaching profession. Some of the many unique features of the undergraduate program include:

  • Pioneering work in music learning theory
  • A nationally heralded music extern teaching program
  • An emphasis on functional technology literacy
  • Private lessons from the major performance faculty
  • Wide ensemble performance experience
  • Supervised student teaching

Upon successful completion of the four- or five-year program of study, and after passing the Pennsylvania Teaching Certification Testing Program, students qualify for Instructional I Pennsylvania State Certification, a requirement for teaching choral, instrumental, or classroom music in Pennsylvania public schools.

The Master of Music in Music Education program provides opportunities for advanced study through specialization in either music education practice or music education research.

For those who wish a career in college teaching, Temple University offers a Ph.D. in Music Education with an emphasis on research.

The music education programs at the Boyer College are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the PA Department of Education, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
