Post Baccalaureate Towards Music Teacher Certification Program

The Department of Music Education concentrates on developing the potential music educator so that he or she masters those competencies necessary for entry into the teaching profession. Some of the many unique features of the undergraduate program include:

Program Description

The Post Baccalaureate Music Teacher Certification Program allows those who hold undergraduate degrees in fields outside of music education to become eligible for a Music Education K-12 Instructional I Certificate in the State of Pennsylvania.

Program Requirements

Full and part time enrollments are available. The length of the program varies dependent upon completed coursework the individual brings at the time of admission. A course audit, completed after all admissions requirements have been submitted, determines the individual’s course requirements. Courses for the certification program are offered during the day. One semester of full-time supervised teaching is required. There is no required comprehensive examination.

Students may earn no more than two grades of B- quality, nor more than one F, beginning within the semester during which they apply to the Program. Any failed course must be repeated and passed. The admission requirement of a 3.0 GPA must be maintained throughout the course of study. Students will not be permitted to student teach if the GPA is less than 3.0.

Admission Requirements

  • Official transcripts from all colleges and graduate schools attended
  • Passing Praxis I scores (see ETS Praxis Series )
  • Two letters of recommendation from previous employers, instructors, or other such persons who have direct knowledge of and can speak to the applicant’s capabilities and aptitude for success as a student and potential as a teacher
  • A statement written by the applicant that discloses previous experiences relevant to the decision to apply for this program, and professional interests and goals
  • Audition: If the applicant has a degree in music, the audition is waived. If the applicant has a degree in a field other than music, the audition process is required. Review undergraduate audition requirements for further details.
  • A current résumé
  • Students for whom English is a second language must submit minimum passing TOEFL scores (575 - paper, 233 - computer, 90 - internet)

Decision for Acceptance

The decision for acceptance is made after all admission requirements are complete. Once complete, a transcript evaluation (course audit) is made. Students are notified of acceptance via the Boyer College Admissions office.

If the student is accepted, course requirements and a suggested semester-by-semester schedule are sent along with the letter of acceptance. Before taking coursework, the student must submit a PA Criminal History Record, PA Child Abuse History, and FBI fingerprint clearances. All clearances must be renewed yearly during study at Temple.
