bachelor of music in Music Education

The Department of Music Education concentrates on developing music educators at the undergraduate level who will be ready for successful entry into the teaching profession.

Faculty recommendations for student teaching are not automatic. They must be earned by the student through demonstrated potential in the field, an overall 3.0 GPA plus a 3.0 GPA in Music Education and Music Studies coursework, and passing of Praxis exams I and II. Students not recommended for student teaching may be permitted to graduate after successful completion of additional course work, but will not be recommended for Pennsylvania State Music Teacher Certification.

Upon successful completion of the four-year program of study, the five-year program with a Jazz Studies component, or the five-year double major program of study, and upon achieving passing scores on the Praxis Series Assessments (Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers), students qualify for Pennsylvania state certification for public school music teachers, K-12.

Additional Curriculum Information

Sequencing

Students are advised to stay close to the suggested course of study in order to remain in sequence. Once out of sequence, the Music Education student may need to remain on campus for extra semesters to complete the program.

Music Education 4666 Assessment of Music Learning is prerequisite to Music Education 1671, 2696, 4353, and 4667.

Prerequisite to Music Education 4667 Teaching Instrumental Music to Inclusive Populations are 5 semester hours of Instrumental Pedagogy for Instrumental emphasis and 3 semester hours for Choral/General emphasis. The last required hour, if not taken prior to Mus Ed 4667, must be taken concurrently with it.

Piano and Guitar Concentration

  • Piano or Guitar Concentration: These students must declare a program emphasis (instrumental or choral/general). To declare a choral/general emphasis, the student must be proficient enough to pass a large choral ensemble audition. The student must participate in a large choral ensemble for the required number of semesters. Choral/general emphasis program requirements are followed and applied instruction is taken on piano. To declare an instrumental emphasis, the student must be proficient enough on an instrument other than piano or guitar to pass a large instrumental ensemble audition. The student must participate in a large instrumental ensemble for the required number of semesters. Instrumental emphasis program requirements are followed and applied instruction is taken on piano.
  • Piano Concentration: These students must include Music 1428 Accompanying and Piano Ensemble and Music 1429 Accompanying and Piano Ensemble in lieu of Music 1405 Secondary Piano and Music 1406 Secondary Piano. Two additional credit hours of instrumental and/or piano pedagogy (selected from Music Education: 1654 Lower strings, 1656 Brass II, 1657 Woodwinds II, 1658 Guitar I, and/or Music Studies 1106 Jazz Secondary Piano, 2105 Jazz Secondary Piano, 2106 Jazz Secondary Piano) must be taken in lieu of Music 2405 Secondary Piano and Music 2406 Secondary Piano.

Special Ensemble Instructions

  • Piano Concentration, Music Education with Jazz Studies: Nine semesters of ensembles are required and a mixture of vocal and instrumental ensembles is recommended: Traditional Ensembles - 4 semester hours; Jazz Ensembles - 4 semester hours
  • Vocal Concentration, Music Education with Jazz Studies: Nine semesters of vocal ensembles are required: Traditional Ensembles – 6 semester hours; Jazz Ensembles – 3 semester hours.
  • Instrumental Concentration, Music Education with Jazz Studies: Nine semesters of instrumental ensembles are required: Traditional Ensembles – 4 semester hours; Jazz Ensembles – 4 semester hours; Marching Band – 1 semester hour.
  • Band/Orchestra Emphasis, 4-yr Programs: Two semesters of Marching Band are required for students who choose Instrumental Program Focus. Normally this requirement is fulfilled in the fall semester of freshman and sophomore years.

Music Technology Electives

Electives in Music Technology that serve the Jazz Education student particularly well include:

Music Studies 4713  Sound Recording
Music Studies 4716 Composing Music for Films
Music Studies 4762 Music Technology
Music Studies 4712 Computer Synthesis of Music
Music Studies 4714 Sound Editing

General Education

It is strongly recommended that Music Education students take the following General Education courses as they are highly pertinent to teaching:

US Society  Urban Ed 0854  Education in the Global City
Human Behavior Psych 0861 Workings of the Mind
  TherRec 0813  Disability Identity

Those seeking teaching certification in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are required to engage in a large number of hours focusing on students with special needs. The selection Disability Identity in particular will count towards these required hours. Others are built into required Music Education courses. The student is also responsible for accruing hours outside of class in observation situations. More information on observation hours is obtained through course syllabi and the Music Education Blackboard site.

Penultimate Term Student Teaching

Students who elect to student teach in the penultimate term must return to campus to finish coursework. The only coursework allowable in the final term after student teaching are General Education requirements and ensembles. For the student who has elected to complete the Jazz component, all Music Education courses must be complete before student teaching. Courses specific to the Jazz curriculum but are not Music Education courses may be delayed until after student teaching. Student teaching in the penultimate semester (fall of the second senior year) requires a 3.25 GPA at 115 semester hours. If the student does not meet the GPA requirement, the student will student teach in the spring (final semester of the second senior year). Otherwise, a 3.0 minimum is required for overall, Music Education, and Music Studies GPAs.

Suggested Courses of Study

Suggested course sequences are available by selecting a link below. These documents are for advice only. The student should always consult with the academic advisor when preparing to register for courses.

Communications

Email is an official means of communication on the Temple campus. When enrolled in the Music Education program, students will be added to the Music Education Blackboard site from which many important notices and announcements are sent via email. It is the student's responsibility to stay current with email.

The Blackboard site contains most of the important documents pertaining to the BM in Music Education. It is the most current and complete source for information students will need concerning the degree program. Independently, the student should avail him or herself of all information on this site.

Change of Major

Students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate music degree and wish to be considered for the Music Education degree program must schedule an appointment with the department chair. Change of major is NOT automatic. Students currently enrolled in a non-music undergraduate degree program and wish to be considered for the Music Education degree program must make formal application and take an audition.
