Terell Stafford PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Department of Jazz Studies offers students myriad opportunities to hone their craft and prepare for careers as professional musicians, educators, composers, arrangers and mentors to young people who will one day, play a role in shaping the future history of jazz. Boyer Jazz alumni have carved prominent careers around the country: performing with eminent musicians in New York; writing a film score in Los Angeles; in the studio for major labels; making a difference in classrooms. Boyer’s exemplary faculty brings a unique combination of experiences – both as working musicians and dedicated teachers. Students come to Boyer’s Department of Jazz Studies through its reputation of encouraging artistic individualism. They leave Boyer to become its ambassadors of Jazz.
Recent performances by the Temple University Jazz Band (TUJB) include Dizzy's Club at Lincoln Center (May 2007), an 80th Birthday Hometown Celebration for Philadelphia-native Jimmy Heath at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, and tributes to Clark Terry and Joe Wilder, also at the Kimmel. The Band has performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts with the Terell Stafford Quartet and Carla Cook in a tribute to Dizzy Gillespie and Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center, the Mellon/PSFS Jazz Festival, International Association of Jazz Educators Conferences, the East Coast Jazz Festival, the Midwest Clinic-International Band and Orchestra Conferences and on WRTI, Temple University Public Radio. The TUJB is also a frequent award winner at the annual Villanova Jazz Festival. The Jazz Studies Program hosts the annual Greater Philadelphia High School Invitational Festival. In March 2003, the TUJB completed a tour of Germany which included five performances with the Phoenix Foundation Jazz Band. Amongst the many respected jazz artists who have played with the TUJB on stage in master classes and clinics include Slide Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Woods, Jon Faddis, Mel Lewis, Dick Oatts, Byron Stripling, Conrad Herwig, Claudio Roditi, Antonio Hart, Max Roach, McCoy Tyner, Joshua Redman, Wynton Marsalis, Norman Simmons and Dr. Billy Taylor.
