Instruments & Equipment The Percussion Program has a substantial and varied inventory of professional quality and hand selected instruments which need to be cared for and well maintained. Matriculated students in the percussion program have the privilege and joy of performing on these instruments and share in the responsibility for keeping them in good condition. The instruments are secured and stored in three areas. The most commonly needed equipment is found in the cabinets at the back of the rehearsal hall and in the center cabinet in the percussion studio. Students may obtain a key to these cabinets by remitting a $5.00, refundable key deposit. This deposit is returned at the time the key is returned (any loss of instruments or equipment will be deducted from the key deposit fund). Special equipment (e.g. exotic instruments) is stored in other locations. Requests for access to these instruments may be made to the Section Leader, the Equipment Manager, or the Program Director. Students should feel free to use the instruments. They should treat them with respect, as if they were their own. The instruments should be played properly and responsibly. Instruments should always be returned to the proper storage cabinet. Under no circumstance should instruments be left unattended nor should they be left unsecured. Failure to observe this will result in a revocation of useage privileges. Students are expected to assist in the maintainance and repair of equipment when requested. Equipment may not be removed from Presser Hall except for College scheduled rehearsals or performances. Special equipment needed for recital preparation should be arranged for with the Program Director. It is the personal responsibility of each performer to return instruments or equipment to the secured cabinets upon completion of a service. Section Leaders and the Equipment Manager are not responsible for equipment used by individual players. For outside concerts all equipment should be moved in their appropriate cases or trunks. Time for packing equipment, set-up, repacking, and returning equipment to their storage cabinets should be arranged by the Section Leader.
Practice and Rehearsal Facilities The facilities for practice and rehearsal consist of the large ensemble room (#240), the percussion rehearsal and teaching studio, and six regular practice rooms. The regular practice rooms may be used on a "first-come" basis. In addition to the scheduled ensemble rehearsal times, the large rehearsal room can be reserved for individual practice on a limited basis. Use of the large rehearsal room for individual practice must be arranged with the Program Director and the Department Secretary. The percussion studio is reserved primarily as a teaching studio. Students may practice in the studio with the permission of the Program Director. On occasion, the demand for practice space exceeds the capacity. In this case a practice schedule will be devised to assure that all students have access in an equitable manner. One of the practice rooms is designated for the drum set.
It is expected that practice facilities be used only for practice and that the rooms be kept neat and in good order. Under no circumstances should University instruments/equipment be left unsecured in the practice or rehearsal facilities.
Personal Equipment, Instruments, Supplies Students are expected to purchase instruments, equipment and supplies during their college career. The most immediate needs will be in acquiring books, music, and sticks/mallets. The University has a basic library of percussion books and music. They can be located in the Percussion Office, Paley Library, and the Presser Learning Center. Personal acquisition of music and mallets can cost between $100.00 and $200.00 per semester (1999). Recommended vendors for these are: Steve Weiss Music and Eighth St. Music. A list of recommended sticks and mallets will be supplied to each student.
