In Fall 2009, the project will be completed with Professor Pauline Brooks (John Moores) and Dr. Luke Kahlich (Temple) will co-create a performance work to be performed at the end of the Fall 2009 semester via the internet.

About the Department

Founded in 1968 as a Dance Program in Physical Education, the Temple University Department of Dance (department status since 1974) has an illustrious history and a unique profile.  The department enjoys an international reputation for its commitment to creating the artist/scholar who is well versed in the creation of original choreography and scholarship and prepared to take leadership roles as artists, educators, scholars, advocates, policy makers and agents of change in educational, social and cultural venues.

Consistently ranked among the top programs in the US, Temple Department of Dance graduates have been performers in major companies, created professional companies, and are members of dance faculties at all levels of education and leaders in dance advocacy.  Past cross disciplinary efforts have included programs such as Anthropology, African American Studies, Women's Studies, American Studies and there is great interest in and commitment to future ties with other arts departments, in particular regarding interdisciplinary work.  The doctorate is only one of three in the US and five in the world, with a growing presence of international students.

The Temple Department of Dance also serves a large general university population through its multiple sections of University Core classes, dance technique classes and the Conwell Dance Theater season which includes 12-15 performances throughout the year, showcasing student, alumni and faculty work as well as guest artists.

Temple graduate fellowships include two Presidential Fellowships, ten University Fellowships, five Future Faculty Fellowships, three Dissertation Completion Grants, and three Project Completion Grants.  In addition, two doctoral students have been granted Fullbright Fellowships for study in Africa.  In fall 2004, 85% of undergraduate students had a GPA of 3.0 or above and 50% of undergraduate students had a GPA of 3.5 or above (Dean's List).

In 2002 and 2004, student performers and choreographers were selected for American College Dance Festival Gala Concert presented at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.  Works were among 27 selected from over 400 works adjudicated across the US.

Graduate student awards have been received from the Congress on Research in Dance, Jonathan Lax Foundation and Society of Dance History Scholars, and graduate student presentations include major dance conferences at Ohio State University, University of Oregon, University of Michigan, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Portugal, Taiwan, Florida, and Tokyo.
