Ruth S. Farber, MSW, PhD, OTR/L received her BS in Occupational Therapy from Temple University and her MSW from the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in family studies, with clinical training at Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic. Her PhD is in Counseling Psychology from Temple University. In the Occupational Therapy Program, Dr. Farber teaches courses regarding the psychosocial aspects of disabilities within an individual developmental and family systems perspective, as well as teaching research and doing thesis advising. Dr. Farber has presented both nationally and internationally and has published in refereed journals including the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, The American Journal of Family Therapy, and Work: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment & Rehabilitation.  She was appointed to the Editorial Review Board for the American Journal of Occupational Therapy (1999-2001) and re-appointed (2003-2005). Dr. Farber is co-chairing the Arts and Cultural sub-committee of the Mayor’s Commission on People with Disabilities. She is also a member of the sub-committee entitled “Independence Starts Here“ which includes leaders in the arts and cultural community, and whose mission it is to promote inclusion of people with disabilities. She has been studying the access and barriers to participation in arts and cultural venues for people with disabilities. Her current research includes: 1) mothering with a disability or chronic illness, using both qualitative and quantitative methods; 2) examining the inner-relationships of role participation, health, well-being and social support of mothers with multiple sclerosis (MS). This study has the support of the MS society in obtaining subjects and is funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Formula Funds, $28,000; 3) exploring access and barriers to participation in arts and cultural venues for people with disabilities; 4) examining health-related quality of life in people with disabilities or chronic illness.
