Dr. Roberts studies circadian rhythms in cockroaches such as Periplaneta Americana. He has been interested in the location of the clock in the nervous system and secondly, with the analysis of responses of the clock to changes in the light or temperature of the environment. For example, the basic periodicity of a roach's rhythm can be changed by exposure to constant light or alteration of temperature. One aspect of current interest is the role of supplementary photoreceptors, called the ocelli, which may serve a circadian function in insects.
