Seven out of the nine Pennsylvania signers of the Declaration of Independence served as representatives in the Pennsylvania Assembly: Benjamin Franklin, City of Philadelphia (1750-1763, 1773-1775); John Morton, Chester County (1755-1775); George Taylor, Northampton County (1764-1769, 1775); George Ross, Lancaster County (1768-1771, 1773-1775); Robert Morris, Philadelphia County (1775) and the City of Philadelphia (1776, 1778, 1780, 1785, 1786); George Clymer, City of Philadelphia (1775, 1776, 1778, 1785-1788); and James Smith, York County (1780). Although not a signer, Charles Thomson, a representative of the City of Philadelphia (1774), is included in the gallery of signers because he served as the secretary of the Continental Congress and was a warm and prominent supporter of independence. The biographical essays on Franklin, Morton, Taylor, and Ross appear in Volume Three of Lawmaking and Legislators, while the essays on Morris, Clymer, Smith and Thomson will appear in the Supplement to Volume Three. |
