ATTIC DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD PROGRAM
ATTIC's Distinguished Teaching Awards are presented every
year to two faculty members and two graduate students in
the College of Liberal Arts whose teaching is recognized
as outstanding by a faculty committee. The faculty
awards will go to one senior faculty member and one junior
faculty member. Graduate students will usually be considered
in two categories: those acting as the primary instructor and
those assisting a professor.
Eligibility
Eligible candidates include all members of the full-time faculty
of the College except those who have served on ATTIC's Advisory
Board during the preceding 12 months, as well as faculty members
who have received the award
during the past four years. Except for those who have received the award,
all graduate students teaching in the College are eligible.
Nominations
Current faculty members and graduate students may be nominated for this award by department
chairs, colleagues, students, or alumni(ae); or they may nominate themselves.
Nominations may be made by a letter or a nominating form available on this website (see the bar on the left side of the screen).
All nominations for the 2008 award should reach ATTIC by Wednesday, February 6, 2008.
Criteria for Distinguished Teaching
Although diverse talents and classroom styles go into good teaching, distinguished
teachers in any field are those who consistently and exceptionally:
- demonstrate a command of the subject, along with intellectual breadth
- incorporate current developments into their instruction
- provide a rationale for course content and prepare their presentations
and assignments carefully
- are clear, accurate, and rigorous in their presentations
- make their expectations clear and develop appropriate forms of assessment
- challenge their students intellectually
- provide prompt and full feedback to students on their progress in the
course
- encourage, motivate, and inspire students to do their best work, whether
at the beginning or advanced levels
- participate in the guidance and advising of students
Content of Dossiers
The evidence presented for individual nominees may differ in some respects, but
dossiers will normally include:
- A curriculum vitae of the candidate on the standard CLA form.
- A Teaching Portfolio which might include: (1) a statement of one's
teaching philosophy (2) course material such as syllabi, examinations,
assignments, and samples of student work, preferably from both undergraduate
and graduate courses. Applicants are encouraged to submit this information
in the form of one or more course portfolios that should include all of the
above plus an analysis of each course by the instructor. (3) examples
of curriculum development activities in the department or the College (4)
evidence of individualized work with master's and/or doctoral students.
- Student evaluations from a variety of courses and semesters. These evaluations
should include the following four items:
- I would recommend this course to others
- I would recommend the instructor for this course to a fellow student
- The instructor motivates me to do my best work
- I feel that I am performing up to my potential in this course
- I had a strong desire to take this course
- Reports of classroom visits from the instructor's peers.
- An evaluation statement by the department chair or the appropriate departmental
committee.
The candidate is encouraged to include any additional evidence he or she wishes
to provide (e.g., videotapes of classroom presentations, evidence of innovation
and course development, data on enrollments or on numbers and academic levels
of advisees, letters written by peers and by current and former students, statements
of support from student organizations).
Applicants should keep in mind that quality is more important than quantity
in the documentation of one's teaching. A Teaching Portfolio should be well
organized and reflect the most important elements of one's teaching. Student
and peer evaluations should be selective but also representative of one's
range in the classroom.
Review Procedure
Two faculty committees selected by the Director will review dossiers. The
selection process includes at least one visit to the nominee's classroom by a
member or members of the Advisory Board. The board also makes the
final selection.
