Temple University ASME Chapter

Welcome to Temple University ASME!

We are an undergraduate club comprised of students majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Temple. The club meets once a month to handle business and listen to speakers from industry and academia. This year we plan to attend the national convention and continue to increase interest in Mechanical Engineering on campus. We welcome anyone who is interested in joining to attend one of our meetings. Membership dues can be waved for the first year, and the dues are $25 a year for each following year. For further, please email the ASME officers.

History

When ASME (American Society Of Mechanical Engineers) was founded in 1880, the mission (as stated in the ASME Certificate of Incorporation, or Charter) was as follows:

"To promote the arts and sciences connected with engineering and mechanical construction for scientific purposes, and to that end to meet and associate together to read and discuss professional papers, and to circulate by means of publication among its members the information thus obtained, and for the purpose of maintaining a library."

Although professional practice and ethics were not specifically mentioned in the Charter, the mission does relate to the practice of engineering at that time. The "rules" adopted by ASME in 1880 were primarily concerned with organizational matters, such as membership, officers, meetings, and presentation of papers. ASME has grown from these modest beginnings to an International membership of 125,000 including 24,000 student members.

Historical information obtained from an ASME pamphlet entitled Board on Professional Practice and Ethics, 7/94.
