AIAS and SEAMLab, a materials laboratory and research initiative, have organized a design challenge to be held during studio on Monday, August 28, 2006. All architecture students enrolled in studio for the fall semester will participate in this event following a short introduction by studio coordinators.

Twenty five teams of students from each year will compete to design and construct a chair for the new chair of the department, Lindsay Bremner. Student teams will be provided with a limited palette of materials to use for the construction of the chair. This challenge is an exercise and exploration in the specific nature of the given materials – relating to structure, the human body, scale, proportion, tactility, tectonics, and assemblage. Central to the exercise is the nature of a charette, a quick, decisive and energy-driven design process that relies on collaboration, teamwork, and the successful management of limited time.

Schedule >
2.40 – 3.30 Students meet in individual studios 3.30 – 6.00 Students meet in Fishbowl for Design Challenge 6.00 – 7.00 Pizza and judging

All students should report to the fishbowl promptly at 3.30 to begin the design challenge. Students should bring scissors, xacto and utility knives, cutting mats, metal straight edges, and cameras.
