Undergraduate Degrees

In Fall 2010, the Architecture Department will begin to offer three new undergraduate degrees:

+ Bachelor of Science in Architecture (B.S. Arch, four years, pre-professional)
+ Bachelor of Science in Facility Management (B.S. Fac Man, four years)
+ Bachelor of Science in Architectural Preservation (B.S. Arch Pres, four years)

These three programs share a common two-year foundation studies program. Upon successful completion of this preparatory program, students may enter the B.S. Fac Man or the B.S. Arch Pres or apply for acceptance to the B.S. Arch (pre-professional). The latter is competitive, with only 36 seats.

B.S. Arch (pre-professional)

The four year pre-professional B.S. Arch degree is designed to provide breadth to a professional architectural education. It incorporates Temple University's General Education requirements. This enables students to take advantage of the educational opportunities offered by the wider university community to gain understanding of the social, economic, political, and technological factors which shape the built environment. At the same time, students learn theories and techniques of architectural visualization and design in a four year sequence and are introduced to architectural history and building technology. If followed sequentially by a two year Master of Architecture (M. Arch) degree at Temple University or elsewhere, this comprises a National Architecture Accreditation Board (NAAB) accredited professional education. Holders of the M. Arch degree may be admitted, upon completion of postgraduate internship, to the architectural licensing examination offered in each state, through which they may become registered architects.

Study at Temple Rome or Temple Japan is offered to students in the spring of the third year or fall of the fourth year of study. Students apply for study abroad jointly through the Architecture Department and the International Programs Office. Only a limited number of students are accepted each semester.

Transfer students from may be admitted to Temple's architecture program with advanced standing. Students who already hold a Bachelor's degree and certain other upper level transfer students may be eligible for consideration for participation in various options for acceleration. Placement in is based upon prior architectural education, not merely the number of credits earned at another institution. All transfer students must submit an application to the Tyler Admissions Office.

B.S. Facilities Management

Facility Management is a growing and lucrative field. It has evolved from building maintenance and janitorial services to a more complex field involving real estate and capital asset development and management. The four-year B.S. Fac Man degree is offered in conjunction with the Fox School of Business and Management. It offers general courses in management, finance and real estate. The profession of facility management offers two distinctive categories of service - design services and construction services. The degree offered by Temple has a design and business orientation, with construction related competencies addressed in certain of its courses. The skills of the design orientated facilities manager include architectural programming, planning and drafting and a thorough understanding of the design process, with an emphasis on space planning and visual representation skills. The Architecture Department will apply for recognition of the B.S. Fac Man by the professionally accrediting body, the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) once the first students have graduated.

While the primary purpose of the B. S. Fac Man is education for a career in facility management, successful completion of the B. S. Fac Man may qualify graduates for admission to a 3.5 year graduate architecture (or related discipline) program at another institution.

B.S. Architectural Preservation

The B.S. Arch Pres degree has been developed in line with the guidelines of the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). It engenders respect for the built environment and promotes an interdisciplinary approach towards its preservation. The program specializes in an introduction to the knowledge and skills required for the preservation of modernist architecture in a global context. It incorporates documentation and recording techniques and hands on field work. Graduates of the program will be equipped to work under the supervision of an architect or an architectural historian to document historical buildings, undertake archival research or other more general aspects of architectural practice not requiring licensure. They may qualify to apply for graduate studies in architecture or a related discipline.
