ANTHROPOLOGY
DEPARTMENT
Our
department offers programs at the undergraduate and graduate
level. The general undergraduate
program in Anthropology is intended to give students a
foundation in all of the four sub-fields associated
with the discipline of anthropology. Each of the sub-fields
requires the development of a number of skills including
formulating hypotheses, developing research programs and
proposals, applying theories to the interpretation of data,
including artifacts, and gathering ethnographic information
through participant-observation. There is sufficient
flexibility in the requirements for the general anthropology
major that a student can focus their coursework, if desired,
one any one of the four sub-fields. We also offer a
minor at the undergraduate level.
The graduate
program in Anthropology represents a broad array of
theoretical and geographical cultural interests of a faculty
distributed over the four fields of cultural and biological
anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and archaeology.
All students are admitted directly into a
Ph.D. program. Those students wishing to obtain an M.A. should
consult their advisor after being admitted. After the first
year, students are encouraged to develop their own scholarly
program. In consultation with the faculty, students select
their specialized areas of examination and expertise.
Individual programs of study include introductory and advanced
research seminars in anthropology, independent study,
internships, and appropriate course work in other departments.
