Critical Care
The critical care rotation takes place
in a surgical intensive care unit that admits primarily
cardiothoracic patients, including patients who have undergone
routine cardiac surgical procedures, heart or lung transplants,
aortic dissection or aneurysm repair, and various thoracic
procedures including lung-volume reduction.
The critical care service has primary care responsibility for
patients on this service. Residents gain skill in the management of
mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilatory support, invasive
hemodynamic monitoring, the use of vasopressors, inotropes and
mechanical support devices, renal replacement therapy, nutritional
therapy, and the coordination of recommendations from various
subspecialty consulting services.
The faculty for this rotation provide a multidisciplinary approach
to critical care. The faculty include critical care
anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, and surgeons. The residents on
the rotation are both anesthesiology and surgery residents. All
residents have the same experience and responsibility. Each week
there are several multidisciplinary critical care educational
conferences available to residents. |
