Medical students
education in anesthesiology occurs in the third and fourth
years. During the third year every student has a 1
week rotation in anesthesiology as part of the surgical
clerkship. This rotation takes place in the same
hospital as the surgery clerkship. The third year
rotation is open only to students from Temple University
School of Medicine.
Several
elective rotations in anesthesiology are available for
fourth year students:
Anesthesiology
(Temple University Hospital)
Pediatric
Anesthesiology (Temple University Children's Medical Center)
Critical Care of
the Cardiothoracic Surgery Patient
Information for
Visiting students
Adult
Anesthesiology (Course Code 410)
This rotation
takes place in the operating room at Temple University
Hospital. Students will learn about preanesthetic
evaluation, the selection of anesthetic techniques, the
pharmacology of commonly used anesthetic agents, and the
physiologic effects of the various methods of
anesthesia. Students will develop skills in airway
management and other aspects of anesthesia practice.
During the rotation, students will have the opportunity to
participate in subspecialty anesthesia practice, such as
cardiothoracic anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, obstetric
anesthesia, or pain management. For students with a
specific subspecialty interest an effort will be made to
emphasize that area. Students will participate in all
departmental teaching conferences.
Pediatric
Anesthesiology (Course Code 674)
This rotation
takes place in the operating room at Temple University
Children's Medical Center. Students are integrated
into the perioperative care team at TUCMC. Students
will be taught the entire spectrum of perioperative care of
the pediatric patient. There are formal lectures
within the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology, as well as,
presentations by the students themselves. Students
will develop proficiency in the preopartive evaluation of
the pediatric patient.
Critical Care of
the Cardiothoracic Surgery Patient (Course Code 789)
Students will be
part of the critical care team caring for patients in the
cardiothoracic surgical intensive care unit. The
multidisciplinary CT-ICU team consists of a critical care
attending (anesthesiology, pulmonary, or surgery), fellow
(pulmonary-critical care), residents (anesthesiology,
surgery), and medical students. Students will
participate in morning and afternoon rounds, following 1-2
patients closely. The students will assist in patient
management and will assist and participate in invasive
procedures.
