A Message from the Chairperson

Welcome to the Temple University Department of Anesthesiology website.  This site will provide information regarding our faculty and will also highlight our commitment to patient care, education, and research.  I hope that as you explore this site you will develop a better understanding of the department’s accomplishments and goals.

Whether you are a graduating resident or fellow looking for an academic faculty position, a nurse anesthetist wishing to practice at one of our hospitals or a medical student seeking a clerkship or residency in Anesthesiology, I ask you to consider Temple.

For physicians-in-training, the Temple University Health Sciences Campus is a superb educational setting in which to pursue post-graduate education in Anesthesiology.  You will experience the full-range of perioperative medicine; from preoperative assessment and evaluation to postoperative pain control and the post-surgical care of critically ill patients.  You will also receive training in the subspecialties of anesthesiology, providing the strong foundation that is essential for your future practice of anesthesiology.

For graduating residents and fellows I ask you to consider a faculty position at Temple University’s School of Medicine.  The School of Medicine is central to Temple University’s Health Sciences Campus, which includes more than 3,400 students and 807 faculty members in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and the College of Health Professions. Also on the Campus is Temple University Hospital, which was established in 1892.  Temple University Hospital is a 535-bed facility, which serves as both a primary health provider and tertiary referral center; we are a level-one trauma center and have multiple transplant and magnet programs.  Physicians at Temple University Hospital treat more than 250,000 outpatients and over 20,000 inpatients annually.  The Temple University Children's Medical Center and Shriners Hospital for Children also share a central role in our ability to care for all ages and all illnesses.

Certified registered nurse anesthetists play a vital role in our department.  Positions are available at the Children’s Hospital and at Temple University Hospital.  We have consistently been flexible in our recruitment efforts; often creating new full-time or part-time positions that fit the lifestyle(s) of our candidates.  Sign-on bonuses have historically been offered.

I believe we are fortunate that, throughout the years, our department has developed and maintained a strong sense of community.  We provide an environment supportive of teamwork, clear and open communication, and collaboration with other individuals, departments, and organizations.  And we also strive to offer opportunities for faculty, staff, residents, and students to advance their careers in this field.

The past academic year has been marked by significant faculty recruitment, educational vigor and new research initiatives.  The Department looks forward to continuing its mission of superb clinical care and academic excellence.
