SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Engineering Research Center for Mid-Infrared Technologies for Health and the Environment (MIRTHE) - Summer Research Program
Description: MIRTHE develops knowledge, technologies and engineering systems for mid-infrared (3-30μm) spectroscopy and provides unprecedented optical and chemical trace gas sensing capabilities. MIRTHE advances mid-IR tunable Quantum Cascade lasers, detectors, and ultra-sensitive sensor systems and demonstrates specific applications through testbeds in environmental sensing, homeland security and medical diagnostics.

Minorities in Marine and Environmental Science (MIMES) Summer Internship Program
Description: The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Marine Resources Division, through funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), is accepting applications from undergraduate minority candidates to participate in a rewarding internship program at the Marine Resources Center in Charleston, South Carolina USA. Selected students will spend 12 weeks (May 15th 2011 - August 5th 2011)
- Exploring a number of different marine and environment science disciplines
- Conducting an independent mentor-supported research project
- Participating in field trips to explore diverse coastal habitats
- Receiving classroom training in key elements of scientific investigation
- Preparing a written report and oral presentation for a concluding research colloquium

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
2011 NASA College Scholarship Fund, Inc.
Description: Today’s citizens are called upon to shape the world of tomorrow through the understanding and implementation of scientific and technological advances. We at the NASA College Scholarship Fund, Inc. recognize the critical need for science and engineering graduates. Science and engineering education enhances the broad intellectual capabilities of students and remains one of the best means for determining appropriate responses to significant societal issues. Pulitzer Prize-winning author James A. Michener, who cited the many achievements of the hardworking NASA employees and his desire to promote education, initiated the NASA College Scholarship Fund, Inc. (NCSF) with a significant, unsolicited donation. Incorporated in Texas on October 20, 1982, NCSF uses contributions and/or income exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes. The NASA College Scholarship Fund, Inc., a Texas nonprofit corporation, awards scholarships Agency wide to qualified dependents of NASA and former NASA employees.
- Up to five scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $2,000 each in this 29th year of the program (2011-2012 school year). The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of $8,000 over 6 calendar years.
