The Extern Program: A wise choice for students

Deadline to apply: Wednesday, October 31, 2007; Externship takes place between Monday, January 7 through Friday, January 18

The Extern Program at Temple University Ambler will take place between the fall and spring semesters. Students are placed for two weeks with a company that relates to their intended career goals. The company then agrees to provide that student with projects and responsibilities that will give them the real world experience they are hoping for in exchange for college credit. The purpose of the extern program is to give the students the opportunity to test the waters; to see if that career or industry really is what they expect it to be. The 2006 extern program included students from many different majors ranging from Accounting, Psychology, and Political Science to Criminal Justice and Marketing.

The 2007-2008 Extern Program will be offered from January 7 through 18, 2008, during a portion of Winter Break. The deadline to apply for the Extern Program is Wednesday, October 31.

Society for Exceptional Educators (SEE) Forms Partnership with
Mattison Elementary School

As president of SEE, graduating senior Elizabeth Lewis was instrumental in establishing an ongoing partnership with Mattison Elementary School in Ambler in which students from Ambler developed a mentoring program to assist in creative student programs for young people. It started with a holiday party that we held for the kindergarten class. Lewis talked to one of the guidance counselors about possibly mentoring and it grew out of that discussion. Two other SEE members became mentors with Lewis and word spread. There are now 9 Temple mentors that meet with the children once a week and the program will be continuing next year. They eat lunch with the students, enjoy games with them at recess, and give them someone to talk to. The mentoring program also led to Lewis securing student teaching opportunities in the Wissahickon School District.
