Community Engagement at Temple University Ambler

Charitable Endeavors

It begins before classes even start and ends well after the semester draws to a close. If there is one thing that Temple University Ambler students, faculty, and staff share in common, it's their willingness to help others through any number of causes throughout the year. Temple University Ambler's student organizations, in particular, embrace the idea of giving back to the community in a wide variety of ways - clothing drives, food drives, toy drives, stream clean-ups, beautification projects, special events, bake sales, marathons, concerts, plays, and much more. In 2007, after the tragic events at Virginia Tech unfolded, Ambler's students, in just three days, created the "Temple Cares" campaign, a t-shirt sale that raises thousands of dollars for Virginia Tech's Hokie Hope Memorial Fund. Through turkey drives, blood drives, silent auctions, and charity walks, Ambler's faculty and staff also sought to lead by example. The campus community as a whole understands the importance of giving their time and effort to ensure a better life for others.

Temple University Ambler Faculty and Staff Holiday Celebration

Wednesday, December 12, 2:30 to 4 p.m., Dining Center

During the Holiday Celebration, take the time to say hello to someone new, learn about what they do on campus, and wish them a happy holiday! The celebration will include a few words from Dean Dr. James W. Hilty and a “Not-So-Silent” Auction, which has proven very popular for the last two years. Food and beverages will also be served. This Annual Faculty/Staff Holiday Celebration is generously supported by Sodexho Food Services.

Each year, as part of the Faculty and Staff Holiday Celebration, various items are raffled off during the “Not-So-Silent” Auction to raise money for the Sundermeier Award Fund, established by Marketing and Special Events Rachel Berger when she was still a student at Ambler. The Award honors the memory of Bob Sundermeier, a long-time employee of the Facilities Management Department at Ambler who had to stop working in 2004 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer — he passed away less than a year after his diagnosis.

If any staff or faculty member would like to donate something to be used in the Auction, donations will be gladly accepted. This is also a great time to pass along all of those wicker baskets that are unused from home. Wicker baskets will be used to package items for the auction. The drop off point for baskets and donations will be the Dean’s Office in the Administration Building. Donations will be accepted through Wednesday, December 5. Information: Crisbel Baez at 267-468-8020 (3-8020 on campus).

Home For The Holidays : Community of Cultures Multicultural Holiday Celebration
Friday, November 30, 2007, Learning Center Auditorium

On November 30, the Commuters and Residents Together will host its third annual holiday show, entitled Home For The Holidays: Community of Cultures, written and directed by Temple University Ambler student Jennifer Shields to commemorate many of the major holidays taking place. The program featured the singing, acting, and dancing talents of more than a dozen student organizations.

In the spirit of the season, the celebration was also a charity event, benefiting the Wylie’s Day Foundation, which provides funding for medical research toward curing pediatric brain tumors.  Local parent Stephanie Strotbeck created the foundation after her son Wylie passed away from a brain tumor at just 13 years old.

Shannon Parker, Temple Ambler freshman and Wylie’s cousin, suggested the cause for this year’s holiday show fundraiser.  “The foundation provides awareness for pediatric brain tumors and raises money for research, as well as activities for the children suffering from this horrible disease,” Parker said.

Taking the form of a play, the event will take place in snowed-in airport where George Grimsby, the Ebenezer Scrooge of his day, learns to embrace the holiday spirit.  Through song, dance, special readings, and a surprise or two — all performed by Ambler campus students — George is immersed in the many holiday traditions celebrated during this time of year.
