NEW AMBLER LEARNING CENTER OPENS TO STUDENTS

When the fall semester at Temple University Ambler began Monday, August 28, students entered the classrooms, started their coursework on the computers, and sampled the wireless technology of a completely new, state-of-the-art facility.

The new $18 million, 72,000-square-foot building includes eleven multimedia classrooms, seven computer teaching laboratories, a distance-learning facility, fully integrated technology including wireless access throughout the building, a math-science-writing tutorial center, two art studios, a café, and a 300-seat auditorium.

“The Learning Center is our largest, most prominent building and very likely will become the central point of the campus,” said Temple University Ambler Dean Dr. James W. Hilty. “With its large computer center, wireless access, and array of multimedia and computer classrooms, the Learning Center will place the Ambler campus at the forefront of delivering education through technology.”

According to Susan Hyer, Associate Director of Computer Services at Temple University Ambler, the Learning Center adds 385 new computers to the campus.

“The Learning Center at Ambler provides an enhanced, wireless
state-of-the-art facility for students and faculty. Expanded technologies, in addition to the smart classrooms and computer classrooms, include a technology breakout room, six lounges with LCD displays, and an all-purpose Technology Center with abundant software applications,” she said. “The building fosters a truly progressive, interactive learning environment. This building’s technological ‘wow’ factors will lead to greater learning opportunities for students and better prepare them for the workplace.”

The new 300-seat auditorium will provide a new venue to offer educational and cultural activities for students, faculty, and the surrounding community.

“Up until now the only large space that we have had for lectures and guest speakers, cultural events, concerts, and student activities is Bright Hall Lounge,” said Dr. Wanda Lewis-Campbell, Assistant Dean for Student Life. “The new building is sure to enhance student life on campus. We look forward to having this new facility to expand the programs and activities that we can offer to our students and neighboring communities.”
