Summer Education Camps offer wide range of experiences for children and teens at Temple University Ambler

Now is the perfect time to start thinking about providing fun, educational outlets for your children's creativity and energy when school lets out for another year!

Temple University Ambler is planning dozens of new and returning Summer Education Camp programs, which provide kids, ‘tweens and teens with a broad range of opportunities, from building and programming robots to trying their hand at magic.

Now in its 24th year, the Summer Education Camp program is offered in June, July, and August as a series of one-week camps.

“The camps are a fun-filled approach to academic subjects in a small-group setting,” said Rhonda Geyer, Non-Credit Programs Director for Temple University Ambler, Fort Washington and Center City campuses. “They provide a wonderful opportunity for children ages 8 to 12, and young adults through age 17, to learn about a specific area of interest, experience a college campus, and have a lot of fun at the same time.”

The summer camp season for 2013 will explore topics ranging from digital photography, science, writing, and Web site design to robotics, cartooning, multimedia and film and TV. In addition, we are pleased to offer the “Jumpstart!” skills building camps. These camps will focus on writing and math skills for kids ages 8 to 12. The activities for these camps will be structured around the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). As several offered camps fill up fast, early registration is important.

“With the one-week camp sessions, families can try several different camp programs throughout the summer,” Geyer said. “Children and teens today are interested in so many things that we wanted to offer them the widest variety of fun, educational experiences possible.”

Check out the new CSI: Critter Scene Investigator camp and EcoArtist camp for youths ages 8 to 12. Campers will uncover the mysteries of nature and create masterpieces using materials and inspiration drawn from nature.

“We are pleased to have two Temple University faculty members teaching camps at the Ambler campus this summer,” said Geyer. “Amy Caples, professor in the School of Media and Communication, will teach the new Multimedia Camp for teens ages 13 to 17. Campers will explore what it’s like to work in television — either on camera or behind the scenes.”

Dennis Silage of Temple’s School of Engineering, will be back to teach two popular camps, Exploring Engineering and Advanced Lego Robotics, she said. Campers between the ages of 10 and 14 will use technology and their imagination to solve real-world problems and improve people’s lives in the engineering camp. Campers also have the opportunity to create robots that advance their way through a series of situational problems.

This summer, a variety of full day and half day camp programs will be offered each week. This allows campers the opportunity to stay for the entire day or just come for a part of the day. It also provides flexibility for parents who may need their child in a camp program all day, or just a half-day.
