Temple University Ambler Office of Student Life to host Student Research Conference

When students complete a research project or present a paper in their classroom, it is typically the culmination of weeks of dedication and hard work. In many cases, that one moment in class may be the last time the student shares all of the work that they have done despite having put so much time and effort into their project.

In 2012, the Office of Student Life is hoping to change that.

On Friday, March, 30, 2012, the Ambler Campus Office of Student Life will host the second Ambler Student Research Conference. The event is designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to share their work with their peers, faculty, and surrounding community in a conference setting.

The application and selection process for the conference begins Monday, November 28 — the deadline to apply is February 3, 2012. Applications are available in the Office of Student Life. You may also download an application online.

“We had several students tell us that, while they have opportunities to share their research in the community or in class, there was nowhere to practice or showcase their hard work on campus. Last year’s event proved quite successful and we hope to continue to see it grow each year,” said Lauren Bullock, Coordinator for Student Life at Temple University Ambler. “During the event, students are able to share knowledge that might otherwise be limited to the classroom. The presentation topics are completely up to the students.”

Bullock said the research conference is an excellent opportunity for the Office of Student Life to “connect with the classroom.”

“We often say that with our events there is always something that you can learn, a skill that you can put into practice,” she said. “There is so much incredible student work and student research taking place on campus. This conference fits in well with our mission to provide events and programs that impact students and the community culturally, educationally, and socially.”

The Student Research Conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., March 30, beginning in Bright Hall Lounge with comments from campus administrators, faculty and staff. The presentation sessions will be held throughout the morning followed by poster presentations during lunch.

“The conference is open to any Temple student. Ideally, we will have 6 to 8 presenters of 30 minutes each and 10 to 20 poster presentations — students who may not have full length presentations but would like to share their work,” Bullock said. “Completed applications, letters of support and research and presentation descriptions must be submitted by Friday, February 3. A committee comprised of faculty, students, and administrators will select the projects that will be presented at the conference.”

According to Bullock, each accepted student presenter will receive $50 in Temple University Diamond Dollars and a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card. Poster-only participants will also receive a gift at registration.

“At the university level, classroom projects are not just about getting the grade — there’s research, public speaking, being able to support your findings. You have to be able to articulate your work,” she said.  “Presenting at a conference is something tangible that students can add to their résumé or graduate application. For the community, it’s an opportunity to see the projects, the types of exceedingly high level work our students are producing at Ambler.”
