Rina Cutler to speak at Temple University Ambler

WHERE:   Temple University Ambler, 580 Meetinghouse Road, Learning Center Auditorium

WHEN:     Tuesday, October 27, 5:30 p.m.

During your morning commute, it’s not unlikely that the hectic pace of your travel was on your mind.

“There are more cars on the road.” “Why does it take me longer to get to where I’m going?”

Getting from Point A to Point B is no simple task today. Transportation issues and concerns are something everyone can relate to as we attempt to live our lives in a society that seems integrally entwined in the dichotomy of driving too much while attempting to “go green.”

On Tuesday, October 27, Rina Culter, the City of Philadelphia's Deputy Mayor for Transportation and Utilities, will explore “Cars, buses, trains, and bikes: Meeting the Greenworks Philadelphia Challenge with Transportation Planning.” The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Learning Center Auditorium.

“The Greenworks Philadelphia plan was released this past summer with the ambitious goal of making Philadelphia the ‘Greenest City in America,’” said Dr. Bradley Flamm, Assistant Professor of Community and Regional Planning, who is coordinating the event. “Its authors back that vision up with dozens of specific actions that can help reduce energy consumption, waste disposal, and greenhouse gas emissions, and increase access to healthy food, trees and open space, and the number of green jobs.”

One of the more challenging tasks, according to Dr. Flamm, will be meeting the transportation goals set in the plan.

“Deputy Mayor Cutler will talk about this part of the plan and the role that transportation planners will play in reducing the amount of driving, improving public transit services, and making bicycling and walking safer, more convenient and desirable ways of getting around the city and the region,” he said.

Rina Cutler was appointed Deputy Mayor for Transportation and Utilities by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter in 2008. She is responsible for the coordination and oversight of all transportation functions in the City of Philadelphia. Cutler also oversees the operations of a variety of City agencies, including the Streets Department, the Philadelphia Water Department, Philadelphia International Airport, and the Philadelphia Gas Works.  She additionally oversees the City’s interests with a variety of transportation agencies including SEPTA, the Parking Authority, the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, and the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority.
