Academy of Natural Sciences
At EarthFest 2009, the Academy will present an exhibit on dinosaurs and paleontology that will include touchable fossils and activities. The study of dinosaurs and the Academy have a long history together. The first report of dinosaur fossils in North America was made in 1856 by an Academy scientist, Joseph Leidy. Today more than 30 species are represented at the Academy, about half of which are full skeletal mounts. Find out more about the species in Dinosaur Hall. In addition to the skeletons, visitors can view dinosaur eggs, footprints, dinosaur sculptures, murals, paleontologist tools, a life-sized model showing the internal anatomy of a Stegosaurus and a green-screen video studio where visitors can project their own images into a world full of dinosaurs!

Advanced Chiropractic and Spine Center

Advanced Chircopractic and Spine Center of Maple Glen will provide stress evaluations and important information on holistically living a more natural life. The Center will also provide five minute massage therapy sessions.

Adventure Aquarium
A full three quarters of the Earth is covered with water. Do you know just what goes on beneath those waves? Learn about all of the fun and exciting events and activities taking place at Adventure Aquarium on the Camden waterfront! Go "fishing," get hands-on with the touch tanks, and enter a drawing to win free tickets to the Aquarium!

Bored Know More

Bored Know More.com will show kids and teens a way to find out what green activities are available in their area. The initiative seeks to provide kids and teens with the information they need to become active members of their communities.

Briar Bush Nature Center
Briar Bush Nature Center will explore "The Forest Habitat" through forest artifacts - skulls, leaves, twigs, and nuts - that visitors can handle and learn about. Their educator will also interpret forest ecology and protecting nature wildlife with Eastern Box Turtles. Located in Abington Township, the 12-acre Briar Bush Nature Center includes trails that pass by a windmill-fed pond, the Griscom Bird Observatory, native wildflower gardens, woodlands, and meadows.

Churchville Nature Center
The mission of the Churchville Nature Center is to instill an awareness and appreciation of the natural world in all people through education, and to encourage responsible environmental stewardship with a commitment to the preservation of resources and wildlife habitat. Facilities include a visitor center housing interpretive exhibits, a gift shop and both indoor and outdoor wildlife viewing areas. Visit a re-created Lenape Indian Village or take a stroll through our Memorial Wildlife Gardens. A full range of environmental programs are offered for school classes as well as scout groups. Public programs include bird walks, campfire programs, children's clubs and a wide variety of outings and field trips.

Club Veg — Vegetarian Education Group
Club Veg will share information on the environmental impact of food choices, including water use, land use, and ecology and pollution issues. Club Veg's mission is to educate the public, health care professionals, and health organizations about the benefits of a healthy vegetarian lifestyle.

Delaware Canal State Park, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
Delaware Canal State Park will present a wildlife exhibit, quiz, and parks information. The Delaware Canal is the only remaining continuously intact canal of the great towpath canal building era of the early and mid-19th century. The 60-mile-long park, established in 1940, is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.

Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC)

The DRBC will present a hands-on watershed model, free literature on water quality programs, water conservation programs, historical info on watershed planning, and more. The DRBC is a primary leader in protecting, enhancing, and developing the water resources of the Delaware River Basin. The basin is a source of water supply for approximately 17.5 million people.

Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission - Air Quality Partners
The DVRPC's display will provide brochures and important information on improving air quality in the region. Serving the Greater Philadelphia, Camden, Trenton, Chester area for more than 40 years, the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) is an interstate, intercounty and intercity agency that provides continuing, comprehensive, and coordinated planning to shape a vision for the future growth of the Delaware Valley region.  

Donate Life Pennsylvania

Elmwood Park Zoo
The Elmwood Park Zoo will present a half hour live animal show on the EarthFest Main Stage called "Back from the Brink - Wildlife Success Stories" in addition to presenting interactive "animal biofacts" at their exhibitor booth that help promote the zoo's mission - to foster an appreciation of wildlife and their habitats that will ensure active participation in conservation. This year's exhibit and show will focus on animals that have been rescued by the Endangered Species Act such as eagles, alligators, black footed ferrets, and peregrine falcons. The Elmwood Park Zoo was founded in 1924. In 1985, the Norristown Zoological Society became an official non-profit organization, and assumed control of Elmwood Park Zoo from the Borough of Norristown. Today, Elmwood Park Zoo welcomes over 130,000 visitors annually for an educational adventure in a fun, clean, and family-oriented environment.

The Energy Cooperative
The Energy Cooperative will share information about renewable electricity and energy efficiency. The Cooperative will present solar toys, information and materials focusing on buying renewable electricity, and details about biodiesel and other alternative fuels.

The Environmental Home Store
The Environmental Home Store, Philadelphia's first green building showroom, will present eco-friendly, environmental, sustainable, and non-toxic home refurbishing products, such as flooring, wall finishes, counter tops, plywood and other building materials for homeowners, business owners, residential and commercial spaces.

Fairmount Park
The Wissahickon Environmental Center at Fairmount Park will provide participants the opportunity to see how much water we use doing daily tasks with seeds that represent gallons of water. We'll watch it fill up as the day goes on!

The Franklin Institute

"How to Build a Storm: The Weather Show ": Lightning, twisters and hail — oh my! The Franklin’s Weather Show on the EarthFest Main Stage reveals the science of weather … to the extreme. Where does our weather come from, and what factors make it a sunny day or a blustery one? We’ll make a cloud, explore thunder and lightning, and even create snow. We promise a stormy ending to this show as we demonstrate the power of a tornado! At EarthFest 2009, The Franklin will also present the Electricity Tabletop Exploration. Let their Traveling Scientist be your guide through electrifying experiments! This interactive display includes favorites such as the Van de Graaff generator, plasma ball, jumping rings, and energy bike.

Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania
The Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania will present a variety of simple, quick, hands-on activities that reinforce the EarthFest theme - "Sustaining Our Communities."

The Insectarium
Come see and learn about some of the most amazing animals on Earth! Animals? Yes, insects are animals too. They and their fellow arthropods all play a very important role in balancing our planet. The Insectarium is the country's largest exhibited all arthropod museum. The collections are from all over the world! The Insectarium's extensive live collection demonstrates natural habitats of many unusual insects, trantuals, scorpions, and crustaceans.

March of Dimes March for Babies
On Sunday, April 26, the focus will be on families at the 2009 March of Dimes March for Babies. At this year’s walk, March for Babies Family Teams will be leading the hundreds of walkers in their charge to raise public awareness, reduce the rates of pre-term birth, and increase research to find the cause of prematurity. Premature birth is now the number one obstetric problem in the United States. The Eastern Montgomery County March for Babies 2009 will be held at the Temple University Ambler campus. Registration will take place at 9 a.m. with the walk beginning on campus at 10 a.m. This will be the eleventh consecutive year Temple University Ambler has served as a March of Dimes March for Babies (formerly known as WalkAmerica) host. Every year, the walk at the Ambler campus is a true celebration, with music, activities and a free picnic. Now is the time to get teams together on campus and at area businesses and community organizations. This is an opportunity for friends and family to do something fun together knowing that they are helping give the tiniest babies a fighting chance — pets are welcome too! Montgomery County Beekeepers Association

In an effort to provide a greater understand of honeybees and connect inhabitants of the region with local beekeepers, the Montgomery County Beekeepers Association will display a model beehive, educational materials about the honeybee, honey comb with honey and pollen, and an observation hive with live honeybees. The organization will also have local honey for sale.

Montgomery County Department of Public Safety

An essential component of any sustainable community is emergency planning. The Montgomery County Department of Public Safety provides hazardous materials response to spills and releases within Montgomery County. At EarthFest 2009, the Department will lead visitors in decontamination and instrumentation demonstrations.

Montgomery County Health Department
The Montgomery County Health Department will present information on the Department's water quality management programs. This interactive display will educate visitors about water pollution, water contaminants, and water conservation practices, including environmental health information related to on-lot well water and sewage disposal systems.

Montgomery County Parks and Heritage Services - Green Lane Nature Center
Through hands-on activities, Montgomery County Parks and Heritage Services will encourage children to become environmental stewards. Their Earthfest 2009 exhibit will include the "Shoe Display," which includes shoes made from environmental materials.

Montgomery Newspapers
Part of the All Around Philly Newspaper Network, Montgomery Newspapers has been an EarthFest media sponsor for six years. Find out what's happening in your community with Montgomery Newspapers as they promote recycling paper products at Temple University Ambler!

The Morris Arboretum
Assisting with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Kids Grow Expo, the Morris Arboretum is an interdisciplinary center that integrates art, science and the humanities. Thousands of rare and lovely woody plants, including many of Philadelphia's oldest, rarest, and largest trees, are set in a romantic, 92-acre, Victorian landscape garden of winding paths, streams, flowers and special garden areas.

Munro Ecological Services Inc.

Munro Ecological Services will present an exhibit highlighting ecological restoration centered on stream restoration - stream degradation and restoration will be exhibited. The 12-foot long stream table will include an active waterway demonstration.

PECO Energy

PECO is doing more than just providing energy, they're working to make a difference in our communities. PECO understands that being a business leader involves more than being a reliable provider of energy services. It also means being an important part of the communities it serves and working to sustain our environment.

Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation
The PA DCNR will present an interactive display involving hypothetical grant allocations. The DCNR will provide visitors with play “money” with which they will have some hard choices to make. Should funding go to preserve open space or to environmental planning, river conservation or park development? At days end, the Department will tabulate the results, providing the DCNR with a clear picture of where the public’s interest lies when it comes to conservation. The DCNR will also host an environmental question and answer game - will you win a prize for your environmental savvy?

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection
Staff from the Department of Environmental Protection's southeast regional office will be on hand to distribute environmental education information and answer questions from EarthFest participants. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is the state agency largely responsible for administering Pennsylvania's environmental laws and regulations. Its responsibilities include: reducing air pollution; making sure our drinking water is safe; protecting water quality in our rivers and streams; making sure waste is handled properly; supporting community renewal and revitalization; promoting advanced energy technology; and helping citizens prevent pollution and comply with the Commonwealth's environmental regulations. DEP is committed to general environmental education and encouraging effective public involvement in setting environmental policy.

Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) will share information about healthy habitats, providing materials on fishing and boating and ways to keep our aquatic resources healthy. Learn about migratory fish and play an interactive game about their migration! Commission representatives will also talk about and show examples of macroinvertebrates and how they are important for fish. The PFBC's mission is to protect, conserve, and enhance the Commonwealth's aquatic resources and provide fishing and boating opportunities.

Pennsylvania Planning Association
The Pennsylvania Planning Association's exhibit will explain planning in Pennsylvania and its relationship to the environment and sustainability, including sprawl, open space preservation, and redevelopment. The Pennsylvania Planning Association (PPA) is a chapter of the American Planning Association (APA). PPA is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for professional planners and planning officials, as well as other organizations and individuals interested in planning. Approximately 1,300 members strong, PPA works to promote planning at all levels of the Commonwealth through workshops, meetings, an annual conference, legislative monitoring, and public awareness efforts. PPA members participate with various groups with shared values and goals.

Pennsylvania Resources Council
The Pennsylvania Resources Council will lead visitors in a recycling and provide important environmental education information. The PRC's Litter Bug mascot will also be on hand to greet visitors and share important information about preserving Pennsylvania's natural resources! A nonprofit citizens’ action organization founded in 1939, PRC serves as a vital link between industry, government, and grass-roots organizations — initiating dialogue between these groups to seek solutions to environmental problems.

Pennypack Farm & Education Center

Learn about sustainable farming through hands-on activities such as "guess the vegetable" and "where did that food come from?"Pennypack Farm Education Center for Sustainable Food Systems is a charitable, nonprofit educational organization dedicated to increasing public understanding of the health, economic, ecological and social issues involved in sustainable local food systems. The farm works with individuals, families, communities, environmental and educational institutions to raise awareness about sustainable local food systems by offering educational programs and a community supported agriculture (CSA) demonstration project.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies aren't just the World Series champs, they are also promoting recycling and protecting the planet for future generations through environmental responsbility right in the ballpark! The Phillies are looking for friendly volunteers from local colleges and community organizations to join the Phillies Ballgirls and help collect recyclable materials from fans in the seating bowl throughout each game at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia Water Department (Office of Watersheds)
The Department will share information on natural and urban watersheds, watershed partnerships, and river conservation plans to help us improve our water quality and green our land. The exhibit will also include a watershed model and a macro invertebrate identification exercise titled “Good vs. Bad Bugs” to demonstrate how insects are tools in determining water quality health.

Philadelphia Zoo
"Beaks and Bills": Be a part of the Zoo on Wheels on the EarthFest Main Stage! This interactive program offers a wonderful introduction to the diverse world of birds. Meet hawks, owls, macaws, and more and learn about the exciting new McNeil Avian Center opening this summer at the Philadelphia Zoo! In addition to their Main Stage Program, the Zoo will present a booth exhibit with live animals and information on the Zoo, conservation, the Footprints Sustainability Program, and ways to help the environment at home. America’s first Zoo and one of the region’s foremost conservation organizations, the Philadelphia Zoo is home to more than 1,500 animals, many of which are rare and endangered. The Zoo, fulfilling its mission of conservation, science, education and recreation, supports and engages in conservation efforts to protect endangered species around the world.

Plant Ambler
Plant Ambler is a community beautification effort staffed entirely by volunteers and supported by donations. Volunteers have been providing displays such as spring pansies, fall mums and winter greens throughout the borough since 1973. The staff experts are always willing to share knowledge about gardening with the “green” newcomers. If you would like to help them make Ambler a more attractive place to live and work by donating your time or money, you can call them at 215-643-4929.

The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education
Learn about the wildlife that lives in our urban and suburban neighborhoods and how people can be better enighbors to these animals. Discover what to do if you find a sick or injured animal.

Schuylkill Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic
Joining the EarthFest Main Stage activities for 2009 is the Schuylkill Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic! Formed in 1987, The Schuylkill Center’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic (SWRC) is in operation to care for injured, sick, and orphaned wildlife native to southeastern Pennsylvania and release them back into their natural habitat. At SWRC, medical treatment and temporary refuge are provided for native birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians in need. In fact, since the department’s creation, over 40,000 animals have been treated!

Sesame Place

You might not think lasagna has anything to do with gardening. Then again, anything is possible when Abby Cadabby and her Sesame Street friends are involved! In May, EarthFest exhibitor Sesame Place will welcome students for a fun, hands-on lesson in conservation and environmental stewardship. A first-time EarthFest exhibitor, Sesame Place will also be bringing along some friends — Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street! The new educational program being offered at the park, Sesame Street: My World is Green and Growing — a collaboration between Sesame Place, Sesame Workshop, and Lowe’s Hardware — will teach children in grades pre-K through 3 about water conservation, recycling, and sustainability in a way that is both relatable and understandable for even the earliest levels of education. Sesame Place is located 30 minutes north of Philadelphia and 90 minutes south of New York City. Share in the spirit of imagination with your kids at Sesame Place — where you can experience Sesame Street together through whirling rides, water slides, colorful shows and furry friends. And where you’ll discover that sometimes, the best part of their childhood is rediscovering yours!

Sun & Earth, Inc.
Sun and Earth, Inc. will share samples of the company's environmentally friendly, non-toxic cleaning product. Sun & Earth provides consumers with powerful natural cleaning and laundry detergent or laundry products that are gentle on the Earth.

Upper Dublin Environmental Protection Advisory Board (EPAB)
The Upper Dublin EPAB will present award-winning stormwater management pamphlets created by Upper Dublin High School students. EPAB will also present a short cartoon entitled "The True Cost of Food."

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum
Through games and demonstrations, EarthFest participants will become a migrating bird and travel through different countries. Will you be successful enough to have a nest full of young? Visitors will also learn about backyard habitats. Since its establishment in 1972, the Refuge has worked with local students and teachers in the surrounding school districts to provide environmental education. Its programs focus on providing teachers the information and skills they need to use the Refuge as their outdoor classroom. Over 6,000 students participate in field trips at the Refuge each year. Whether it's a pond study, tree identification, or poetry, the Refuge's surroundings provide a perfect setting to discover and learn about the outdoors.

U.S. Representative Allyson Y. Schwartz
Representatives from U.S. Rep. Allyson Y. Schwartz's office will provide handouts and literature regarding environmental health.

Waste Management

In addition to generously providing trash and recycling receptacles for EarthFest 2009, Waste Management will have a large trash/recycle truck on hand and provide visitors a play-by-play on how the vehicle and its driver work to keep our neighborhoods clean throughout the region. Waste Management will also share information about its Think Green program, the importance of recycling, and the company's commitment to the environment.

Wondergy (Presented in part by the Sigma Chi Delta Sorority)

"CoolScience:" Hammer a nail into solid wood with a banana? Blow up a balloon ... from the outside? Wondergy will help you explore how matter changes from solid to liquid to gas with liquid nitrogen. At 320 degrees below zero, it’s the coolest stuff around! Topics of this fascinating presentation will include: molecules, thermal motion, heat transfer, air pressure, density, physical changes, and more! At its booth exhibit, Wondergy will present Project: Ice Cream, demonstrating (and giving out samples) of fresh ice cream made using liquid nitrogen! Just in time for Passover, the ice cream is also Kosher!

Worm Breeders of Mount Airy

You don’t have to have a big yard with a lot of space to compost kitchen scraps; red worms can do the job for you with just a little space indoors. We’ll show you how to make a home for worms with just a plastic container, some bedding material, and regular sprinklings of water. In return, they’ll take care of your banana peels, apple cores, and rusty lettuce leaves, turning your kitchen wastes into excellent potting soil and liquid fertilizer for your plants with no messes, no smells and no hassles.

Planning Playground

Want to learn how to plan towns and cities with the latest technologies while protecting and preserving the environment and natural resources? Want to learn about careers that will help you directly impact your communities? Visit the Planning Playground at EarthFest 2008 and explore the planning field, mapping with technology, and sustainability through fun, interactive games and projects. The Planning Playground is presented by event host the Center for Sustainable Communities, the Department of Community and Regional Planning, the Ambler Campus Sustainability Council, and the Temple Planning Society.

Student members of the Sustainability Council will lead visitors in building sculptures using recyclable materials.

Center for Sustainable Communities at Temple University Ambler
Event host the Center for Sustainable Communities will showcase some of its completed and ongoing projects with the help of Geographic Information Systems maps, posters, reports, and handouts in addition to letting visitors try their hand at mapping too! The Center for Sustainable Communities was established to develop and promote new approaches to protect and preserve quality of life through sustainable development, balancing the relationship between environmental integrity, economic prosperity, and social equity. A working resource for government agencies, community organizations, and developers, the Center provides objective information and services to improve decision-making relative to land use and water resources planning in addition to conducting interdisciplinary research and offering educational and community outreach programs.

Temple University Ambler Department of Community and Regional Planning
The Department of Community and Regional Planning will showcase selected student projects and provide information about the program and courses focusing on sustainability and environmental issues in addition to offering interactive games for students.

Temple University Ambler Planning Society

Community and Regional Planning students will offer interactive games for elementary, middle, and high school students, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, building a neighborhood, and planning a date using GIS!

 

Planting the Seeds of Learning

Learn about careers that directly impact the world around you through hands-on projects, such as planting plugs, learning how to recycle, and discovering careers that will place you on the front lines of designing sustainable landscapes. The Planting the Seeds of Learning tent is presented by the Landscape Architecture and Horticulture Student Association and the Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture.

 

Jubilee

The Jubilee student organization will lead visitors in a fast paced and fun recycling demonstration.

Landscape Architecture and Horticulture Student Association

The Landscape Architecture and Horticulture Student Association will provide a hands-on lesson in horticulture and sustainability as they help our student visitors pot a marigold plant of their own to take home in personalized containers. Students will also share important information about our sustainable campus and our programs in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, which place students in a unique position to help preserve their natural landscapes for today and tomorrow.

Temple University Ambler Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture
Students from Temple University Ambler's Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture will present a display highlighting the department's 2009 Philadelphia Flower Show exhibit, "Green Renaissance - The Revival of Sustainable Living" in addition to providing learning experiences exploring the Landscape Architecture and Horticulture programs. Inspired by 16th century Italian gardens, Temple University Ambler's award-winning 2009 Flower Show exhibit features edible, native, and xeric plants. Among its many sustainable living ideas, the exhibit demonstrates innovative ways to harvest rain water to create beautiful water features that also irrigate the gardens.

 

Landscape Arboretum of Temple University Ambler Advisory Board
The Advisory Board will present an exhibit highlighting Temple University Ambler's Best of Show Winning 2005 Philadelphia Flower Show exhibit, “Progressive Women in Horticulture: A Driving Force in Philadelphia — 1904 to 1924.” The exhibit highlighted the women who founded the Garden Club of Philadelphia in 1904, followed by the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women in 1910 (the forerunner of Temple University Ambler), the Garden Club of America in 1913, and the Woman’s Farm and Garden Association in 1914. Their founding members would shape the future of public and private horticulture for years to come. Landscape Arboretum Director Jenny Rose Carey will also lead tours of the Arboretum at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and Noon.

Temple University Ambler is often called the “best of both worlds.Students enjoy the benefits of attending a small residential campus, while having all of the resources of a large research university at their fingertips. Philly is just down the road and the local communities have so much to offer! Temple University Ambler Summer Education Camps
Kids on Campus! Teens on Campus!

Temple University Ambler and Fort Washington are proud to offer Summer Education Camps for the 20th consecutive year. Camps are available for kids, tweens and teens between the ages of 8 and 17. They provide a wonderful opportunity for youths to learn about a specific area of interest, experience a college campus, and have lots of fun at the same time! Temple University Athletics
Temple Athletics promotes a healthy lifestyle for children by encouraging participation in sports and other outdoor activities through the Owlsports summer camps and Hooter’s Junior Owl Kids Club. Temple University mascots Hooter and Baby Owl will also promote healthy lifestyles with visitors to EarthFest 2009!

Temple University Center for Obesity Research and Education (CORE)
Healthcare is an important part of community sustainability. CORE will present information about the Center. Representatives will also discuss health, fitness, and CORE projects in addition to providing nutrition and exercise information for improved health and wellness.

Temple University Computer Recycling Center
Temple will provide information on its Computer Recycling Program, which involves recycling computer parts to promote a healthier environment.

Temple University Dining Services/Sodexo
A variety of food and beverages will be available for sale at EarthFest courtesy of Temple University Dining Services.

Temple University Facilities Management

Temple University Facilities Management is involved in a wide variety green initiatives at Temple University Main Campus and the Ambler Campus. At EarthFest, Temple University Ambler Facilities Management will have an electric car and a re-outfitted hybrid vehicle onhand to promote the use of alternative fuels and the use of hybrid vehicles.

Temple University Infant Lab
The Temple University Infant Lab, located at the Ambler Campus, will provide information about its research and the implications of child cognitive development. The Infant Lab is an active community member whose chief goal is to investigate what makes us who we are!

Temple University Law Enforcement Academy

Did you know there is a Law Enforcement Academy right at Temple University Ambler? The Temple University Law Enforcement Academy and the Criminal Justice Training Programs have made the Ambler Campus a focal point for criminal justice training and curriculum development in Pennsylvania. Criminal Justice Training Programs (CJTP), a division of the Temple University Department of Criminal Justice, has assumed a leadership role in the training of Pennsylvania’s criminal justice practitioners. From the Temple University Municipal Police Academy to the in-service police training, to curriculum development for Deputy Sheriffs, to the in-service training for Deputy Sheriff’s and basic and in-service training for Constables, the Ambler Campus program is one of the busiest law enforcement training centers in the state. Exhibiting Schools

 

Benjamin Franklin Elementary School

Students from Benjamin Franklin Elementary School will "Trash & Junk Projects," displaying creative ways that we can use things that we usually throw away. The exhibit promotes environmental awareness and encourages everyone to "reduce, reuse, recycle."

Green Woods Charter School
Students from Green Woods Charter School, will showcase their involvement with the DETOUR (Detour for Emerging Toads of Upper Roxborough) project. Every year, the toads from the forest surrounding the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, with which the Charter School is affiliated, attempt to cross Eva Street to get to the Roxborough Reservoir to mate and spawn - sadly, about half of the toads each year do not make it. Students have created signs to the temporary traffic barricades that will be put in place during heavy migration in addition to developing educational and awareness campaigns.

Methacton High School

Members of Methacton High School's Methacton Electric Car Club will have their electric car - The Lorax - on hand, talk about how it works, and how it is charged with solar power. The Methacton Electric Car Club, based in Montgomery County, was developed as a way of fostering technological understanding in a friendly environment. Methacton High School is this year's EarthFest Committment to Sustainability Award recipient.

Palisades High School
Students will be showcasing their ideas to transform their high school and local community into a sustainable environment. They will highlight their "Save the World" projects - Chemistry II students have researched and, where possible, tested different sustainable processes.

Saint Norbert School

Fifth and Sixth graders from Saint Norbert School will present "Caterpillar Cafe," an interactive exhibit presenting research and encouraging action. Butterflies are not only beautiful, they are a litmus test of our environment. We can help preserve butterfly populations by planting wildflowers and host plants for caterpillars.

Sandy Run Middle School

Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders from Sandy Run Middle School will lead students in a "recycling toss," which will have visitors separating trash into categories. What is it - trash, recyclable, or good for composting? See if you can guess correctly!

Solebury School

High School students from the Solebury School will be presenting a puppet show created and performed by them entitled "Endangered Means There's Still Time." Learn what you can do to help protect and preserve endangered species during this interactive and fun program, which will be presented at their exhibit booth throughout the day!

Upper Dublin High School 
Six student groups from Upper Dublin High School will present a variety of projects at EarthFest 2009 related to the event theme of sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Upper Dublin High School exhibit topics will include:

  • Ecological Footprints
  • History of Asbestos in Ambler
  • Global Warming/Alternative Energy
  • Save the Animals
  • Underground Animals
  • Plant a Seed and Health the Earth

Wordsworth Fort Washington - Interact Club
The Wordsworth Interact Club performs various community service projects, such as planting trees in the Wissahickon Valley Watershed, promoting recycling drives, and assisting area schools in their environmental efforts.


Temple University Ambler Student Organizations at EarthFest

 

Since the event's inception in 2003, Temple University Ambler's student organizations have joined together to provide fun, educational programs for students of all ages. Whether it's bringing new, fun, educational programming to the event or leading visitors in a game of "Recycle Bottle Bowling," our students seek to teach environmental stewardship through interactive, creative, hands-on activities.

Gamma Sigma Sigma Sorority

Every forest starts with a small seed. The sisters of the Gamma Sigma Sigma Sorority will lead young visitors in a seed planting activity, which students will be able to take home with them!

Jubilee

The Jubilee student organization will lead visitors in a fast paced and fun recycling demonstration. The group will also share information about the Jubilee organization.

Landscape Architecture and Horticulture Student Association

The Landscape Architecture and Horticulture Student Association will provide a hands-on lesson in horticulture and sustainability as they help our student visitors pot a marigold plant of their own to take home in personalized containers. The students will also share important information about our sustainable campus and our programs in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, which place students in a unique position to help preserve their natural landscapes for today and tomorrow.

Pennsylvania Students Working Against Tobacco (PA SWAT)

The Ambler chapter of PA SWAT will share important information on the dangers of smoking and offer suggestions and resources about smoking cessation.

Sigma Chi Delta Sorority

The Sigma Chi Delta Sorority will lead students in a hands-on activity related to Wondergy's "CoolScience." activities. The sorority is also helping to sponsoring Wondergy's participation in EarthFest 2009. Using liquid nitrogen, Wondergy will create fresh ice cream at their exhibit booth! On the EarthFest Main Stage, Wondergy will present "CoolScience."

Society for Exceptional Educators

The theme for the Society for Exceptional Eductors' booth is based on the popular Dr. Seuss book The Lorax. Visitors will be in charge of the last 10 Truffula seeds and they will have to save them (by catching them) to be able to replant the forest  studenst will have to catch the seeds to save them. Students will be rewarded with bags of seeds and instructions on how to plant and take care of them.

Temple Column

Join the staff of the Temple Column student newspaper as they team up with Montgomery Newspapers as they help educate visitors about recycling through interactive art projects. Column staff will teach students how to create fun shapes and objects using recycled newspaper.

Temple University Ambler Food Committee/Residence Hall Senate

The Ambler Campus Food Committee and Residence Hall Senate are teaming up to present a recycling toss in which participants will have to toss a recyclable item into the correct bin. The organizations will also share information on the importance of recycling.

Temple University Ambler Planning Society

Part of the Planning Playground, Community and Regional Planning students will offer interactive games for elementary, middle, and high school students, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, building a neighborhood, and planning a date using GIS!

Temple University Ambler Program Board

Student members of the campus Program Board, in association with PA Cleanways, will help visitors learn how they can clean up their neighborhoods and prevent litter through interactive workbook activities and other fun and games.

Temple University Ambler Student Government Association/Brothers and Sisters United/Criminal Justice Society

Take a "pet" home from EarthFest! The Ambler Campus Student Government Assocation, in cooperation with Brothers and Sisters United and the Criminal Justice Society, will lead visitors in painting their own "pet rocks!"
