LOCATION: The T-VSSI researchers installed a Stormwater Wetland and associated Riparian Buffer along Terwood Run, south of the Inverness Road bridge at the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust (PERT). PERT is located within the Pennypack Creek Watershed. The area selected for planting the riparian buffer was chosen because it was in close proximity to the location selected for the installation of the stormwater wetland and lacked riparian buffer vegetation. Riparian Buffer at Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: In July 2006, the T-VSSI team constructed the Riparian Buffer along Terwood Run, south of the Inverness Road bridge on the property of the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust (PERT). The riparian buffer is located approximately 200 feet upstream of the Stormwater Wetland on Terwood Run’s eastern bank. The riparian buffer extends 75 feet. The riparian buffer stabilizes the stream bank and reduces stream bank erosion. In August 2006, the research team planted the stream bank with native trees and shrubs in an attempt to establish a deep root system that will provide stability against bank erosion during high flows caused by extreme events.

DESIGN GOALS: The design goals of the riparian buffer are to:

  • Stabilize streambank

  • Reduce streambank erosion

  • Establish riparian buffer habitat
