The Valley Green Environmental Restoration Program was created by the Friends of the Wissahickon to rehabilitate the Valley Green Inn and improve the environmental condition of the land surrounding the Inn. Flooding had taken its toll along this portion of the Wissahickon Creek, and the corridor’s stone walls were battered from the water loads. To prevent future flood damage from occurring, rain gardens and riparian restoration techniques were designed by Andropogon Associates to capture stormwater in order to mitigate water volume. These BMPs enhance streamside habitat conditions and water quality by filtering pollutants from runoff; the riparian buffer also prevents streambank erosion.
These site improvements were implemented along with other safety and
access improvements, including increased parking and curbs, better
sidewalks, additional points of access, and lighting. This project was
begun in May 2006 and was completed in September 2008. |
