 Description

Covering an area of nearly 35,000 square feet, the green roof on the University City Science Center’s building at 3711 Market Street in West Philadelphia is one of the city’s largest green roofs. The building, which was constructed in 2008, has been awarded Silver LEED  certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

This project, located within an urban renewal district, is also an example of adaptive reuse. Further, the area is covered by a revitalization plan that emphasizes incorporating green technology into site redevelopment projects. Prior to the construction of this building, the parking lot located on this site created a layer of 100% impervious cover. The green roof will capture stormwater runoff, reducing the amount of runoff that the site contributes to the city’s storm sewer system.

The 155,000-square-foot, 10-story building includes wet labs, offices and work spaces for small and mid-sized life science and tech companies. It is also home to the Science Center’s corporate headquarters and Global Soft Landing business incubator, which provides a soft landing for international companies seeking entry into the U.S. life sciences, information technology and clean energy markets.
