Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse is a privately owned facility within Fairmount Park that has been a favorite site for children since it opened to the public in 1899. The facility underwent a renovation to upgrade the playground equipment to current safety standards in 2005, and is currently undergoing additional renovations. As part
of the upgrades, Hunt Engineering prepared a stormwater management plan
for the site. The stormwater management strategy includes structural and
non-structural BMPs, including an underground infiltration area,
vegetated swales, and a rain garden. The design not only infiltrates
stormwater runoff from the new playground, it also redirects runoff
across a greater area to reduce the effects of erosion that has plagued
one of the Park’s ravines for decades.
