In October 2009, the Friends of Borough Park in Ambler began an effort
to restore 3.5 acres of the park bisected by Rose Valley Creek. The
riparian buffer that had been established had become overgrown with
invasive species, including multiflora rose, bamboo, Norway maple,
Japanese knotweed, and other invasive species. The first phase of the
project focused on invasive plant removal. Grant funds from the
TreeVitalize program will be used to purchase native species that will
be planted in the buffer, expanding the buffer’s width from 10 to 50
feet. In addition to reducing flooding downstream and reducing the
amount of nonpoint source pollution entering the stream, the buffer also
provides streamside habitat for small wildlife. |
