 Description

With two TreeVitalize grants providing the funding and volunteers providing the manpower, the Montgomery County Conservation District oversaw the planting of 670 trees on two sections of the Natural Lands Trust Property at Welsh Road and Mann Road in Horsham Township.

The first planting took place in November 2007, when 170 trees and shrubs were planted to supplement the existing riparian buffer. There were twenty five volunteers planting an area of approximately 15,000 square feet with native plant species.

The second planting took place in over one weekend in May 2008, when 500 native trees and shrubs were planted on approximately 90,000 square feet of area to provide a riparian buffer where none existed already. Twenty five volunteers worked on Saturday and sixteen on Sunday to complete the planting.

Each of the 670 trees and shrubs was fenced to prevent damage from deer. In addition to addressing the need for a riparian buffer, the plantings will add depth to the biodiversity of the area, provide habitat for native birds and animals and help with erosion control.
