 Description

As part of their “Wissahickon Stormwater Mitigation and Sediment Reduction Project,” the Friends of the Wissahickon will complete projects at four sites where eroded gullies and trail corridors have contributed thousands of pounds of sediment into the Wissahickon Creek. These four sites, located on the west side of the gorge in Wissahickon Valley Park in Mount Airy, are part of a larger plan that identifies twelve erosion management projects to be completed in the park. During a storm, gullies and trails act as conduits for runoff, which compounds erosion problems, as runoff carves deeper channels into the gully and transports the soil into the stream.

Projects will address the following sites, which have contributed more than 7,000 cubic yards of soil to the Wissahickon Creek:

  • Stormwater gully and trail closure near Mount Airy Avenue (total loss of 4,214 cubic yards of soil)
  • Stormwater gully behind Blue Bell Meadow (total loss of 945 cubic yards of soil)
  • Stormwater gully and trail degradation near Rittenhouse Town (approximately 500 cubic yards of soil)
  • Stormwater gully and trail closures near Kitchens Lane (total loss of 1,592 cubic yards of soil)
