An associate professor of chemistry, Dr. Jansen-Varnum’s expertise is in
analytical chemistry, particularly in the areas of chemical
contamination and soil chemistry. Dr. Jansen-Varnum is also involved in
the study of organic polymers to replace chromium in the environment.
While teaching General Chemistry at Ambler, she also coordinates the
science program overall. Dr. Jansen-Varnum has been with Temple
University since 1987, teaching all disciplines of chemistry during her
tenure. She is a science advisor to the Food and Drug Administration’s
Philadelphia district offices, providing oversight on projects and
training for FDA staff. She is also involved in a number of
science-related student outreach programs, including the Alliance for
Minority Participation in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering, and the
Bridges to the Baccalaureate program, recently funded by the National
Institute of Health. Dr. Jansen-Varnum is an associated faculty member
of the Center for Sustainable Communities at Temple University Ambler.
