The Temple University Ambler Campus has a rich history dating back 100 years when Jane Bowne Haines officially opened the doors to the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women in 1911.
In 2011, Temple University Ambler will host a yearlong celebration of the rich history of the campus, which began as the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women, transitioned to the Ambler Junior College (allowing men to attend for the first time), and became the campus of Temple that it is today.
From an exploration of "100 Years of Women in Gardens," historic tours of the campus gardens, and an annual plant sale tradition that dates back decades to formal dedications of the Louise Bush-Brown Formal Garden and the Hilda Justice Artifacts Collection, there will be a lot to see and do at Ambler this year as the campus celebrates "100 Years of Academic Excellence."
For information or to register for any of our 100th events, please contact Judy Shatz at 267-468-8001 or judy.shatz@temple.edu.

Sunday, November 6, 1 to 3 p.m., Bright Hall Lounge and the Hilda Justice Building
Donations supporting the Ambler Arboretum of Temple University will be graciously accepted
The Hilda Justice Building has been an important part of the Temple University Ambler campus for 60 years. Established as the Hilda Justice Memorial Library of the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women in 1951, it was built to house a collection of 16th Century herbal volumes that then director Louise Carter Bush-Brown had donated to the school. It is fitting that 60 years later, the Hilda Justice Building will once again become a repository of history.
Capping off Temple University Ambler’s year-long celebration of 100 years of academic excellence, the campus community and the public is invited to formally dedicate the “Hilda Justice Artifacts Collection,” a rich overview of the campus’ early history displayed through yearbooks, photos, tools, diaries, documents, and much more.
The event will include a welcome by Temple University Ambler Executive Director William Parshall in Bright Hall Lounge. Ambler Arboretum Director Jenny Rose Carey will also provide some insight into Ambler’s place in history before the event moves to the Hilda Justice Building for a formal ribbon cutting. Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women founder Jane Bowne Haines will also be “present” for the event in the form of an historical re-enactor.
Following the ribbon cutting, participants are invited to return to Bright Hall Lounge for a special tea provided by the Ambler Keystone Chapter of the Woman’s National Farm and Garden Association.
