The energy and creativity of volunteers provide essential support to our gardens and programs. We welcome volunteers with an interest in plants to help our Horticulture Staff maintain the Arboretum’s gardens and lead tours for visiting groups.
Get involved as a volunteer in one of four ways:
- We invite gardeners at all experience levels to join our Tuesday Volunteer Team, which will meest every Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. to Noon. Projects will include mulching and edging of planting beds, dividing perennials, pruning shrubs, weeding, and much more. Please contact Anne Brennan (anne.brennan@temple.edu) for details about where to meet.
- If you cannot participate in our Tuesday morning projects, consider joining our ad hoc Garden Volunteer Team to receive and receive announcements of upcoming volunteer events. Group projects will be scheduled several times during the season, either on weekday evenings or Saturday mornings, and often center around improvements to our historic Woodland Garden.
- Experienced gardeners wishing to volunteer on a weekly basis may arrange with the Horticulture Supervisor to volunteer regularly in a specific garden area. Weekly Volunteers typically work a half-day per week and assist a Horticulture Staff member with all tasks needed to maintain the garden section throughout the season.
- Outgoing folks who enjoy sharing the Arboretum’s history and beauty with visiting groups may join our new team of Volunteer Guides. As part of this group, you will participate in an orientation program to learn about the origins of the Arboretum as the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women and the more recent history of the gardens and related academic programs. As a Volunteer Guide, you will be invited to lead at least two group tours each Spring-Summer season.
For more information about these volunteer opportunities for individuals 18 years of age and older, contact Anne Brennan, Horticulture Supervisor, at 267-468-8191 or anne.brennan@temple.edu.
