On Friday May 1, 2009, a new tradition was launched at the Temple University Ambler campus.
Nine adult students from a variety of majors were inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society. The honor society was started in 1945 at Northwestern University to acknowledge the dedicated adult students who, while juggling their life responsibilities, achieve and maintain high scholastic standards.
The chapter’s name, Nu Omicron Xi, is unique to Temple Ambler and reflects the standard of “Onward to Excellence.”
A total of nineteen students have chosen to join Alpha Sigma Lambda in its first year; the selection process was based on a variety of factors with the primary criteria requiring the part-time or full-time student to be 25 years of age or older with an outstanding grade point average.
Family, friends, teachers and staff were invited to the intimate ceremony that took place in Bright Hall Lounge. After enjoying hors d'oeuvres and good coversation, the induction began with a welcome address from Susan McCaffrey, the Assistant Director of Academic Advising.
She used this time as a chance to reflect on this milestone event and to appreciate the continuous support system on which the adult students depend; this includes accommodating family members, helpful instructors, and understanding employers.
Special guest Dr. James Hilty, Acting Dean for Ambler Campus, gave a lively and personal speech that recognized the value of adult learners in the classroom. The evening continued with Cheryl Leeser, Academic Advisor, and Rachel Gionta, Assistant Director for Admissions, describing the Alpha Sigma Lambda’s symbols and motto, which is “First in Scholarship and Leadership.”
After the students took the pledge of membership and received their certificates and pins, they were given a standing ovation.
The students’ achievements are a result of their ability to be positive, organized and assertive. All of these qualities, combined with great intellect, help them progress toward graduation and take another step on the ladder of success. Congratulations!
