 Dr. James W. Hilty
Acting Dean, Temple University Ambler
A professor of history at Temple University Ambler, Dr. James W. Hilty is a nationally recognized expert on the history of American politics, specializing in the history of the presidency.
Appointed Acting Dean of Temple University Ambler and the Ambler College in September 2005, Dr. Hilty continues to teach a graduate seminar in recent U.S. political history at the Temple University Center City campus and U.S. History Since World War II at Temple University Ambler. Dr. Hilty also supervises a student internship program, helping place Temple history students with regional historical societies and organizations.
Dr. Hilty has been a member of the Temple University faculty since 1970. In 2001, he received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished University Teaching. Prior to becoming coordinator of the history program at Ambler, he was Associate Dean and Acting Dean of the Temple University Graduate School.
He was Associate Provost for Planning, Director of Planning, and subsequently Assistant to the President for Planning under then Temple President Peter Liacouras, overseeing the planning and launching of Temple University Hospital, the University dental clinic, and regional rail line locations at the Main Campus.
A founder and former chair of the Ambler Collegial Assembly, he helped to establish the Ambler Collegial Assembly Academic Achievement Awards to recognize and promote academic excellence among students on the Ambler campus.
Dr. Hilty has published articles on Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. His most recent book (1998) is Robert Kennedy: Brother Protector. Nationally regarded as an expert on the Kennedy administration, he also wrote "The Presidency of John F. Kennedy" for Presidential Administration Profiles (2001). He additionally wrote the introduction and edited the memoirs of former Temple President Marvin Wachman, The Education of a University President (2005), and provided an article for USA Today Magazine "2004 An Election for the Ages?" in 2004.
He has written numerous Op/Ed pieces and been interviewed and quoted in a wide variety of newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News, and many local newspapers. He has consulted and appeared in several television documentaries for NBC, A&E Biography, PBS, and the History Channel and given live interviews on major breaking news stories, such as the impeachment of President Clinton, the Republican National Convention, and the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004 for all of the local television news programs and nationally for NBC, MSNBC, and C-SPAN. He provides frequent interviews for KYW-AM and NPR, through "Radio Times" with Marty Moss-Coane on WHYY.
Once named "Citizen of the Week" by the Ambler Gazette, Dr. Hilty is a longtime resident of Montgomery County, currently residing in Blue Bell. He is a former volunteer fireman and was president of the Ogontz Fire Company in Cheltenham and a member of the Montgomery County Fire Advisory Board. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Southeast Chapter of the American Red Cross and the board of trustees of the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia History.
