Pooled Income Fund Participating in Temple's Pooled Income Fund is easy, and requires a smaller investment than other life income gift vehicles. The minimum size gift is $5,000. Additions of $1,000 or more to the initial gift are permitted. Your gift to the fund is pooled and invested with money contributed by other donors, and you receive a proportionate share of the fund's net income each year for life. You can also name a second, successive income beneficiary. The income you receive is based on the fair market value of your gift and the variable rate of return that the fund is producing. In this way, the Pooled Income Fund acts much like a mutual fund. The current variable return on Temple's Pooled Income Fund is 4.2%. For each gift to this fund, you will receive an immediate income tax deduction for the remainder value to Temple. You can also completely avoid capital gains taxes by contributing appreciated securities. Here is an illustration of how this gift works. Mr. and Mrs. B, ages 55 and 54, are interested in funding scholarships for students. They have a block of stock certificates that they purchased many years ago for $5,000, and are now worth $25,000, paying them a 2% annual dividend (or $500). They intend to retire early so they're looking for ways to increase income. Mr. and Mrs. B can accomplish both of the above objectives by placing these stock certificates in Temple's Pooled Income Fund. When they do so, Temple will pay them a variable income for both of their lifetimes. Based on the current market rate of 4.2%, their income from this asset would be $1,050. The B's will also receive an immediate tax deduction for this gift of $5,942. This tax deduction, along with their savings in capital gains taxes of $4,000, increases their effective yield to 5.4%. The B's also instruct that the remaining principal of their gift is to fund a scholarship in their names when they pass away. With your permission, Temple will recognize your gift through membership in the University's Acres of Diamonds Circle, a distinctive group of fellow alumni/ae and friends who have made a planned gift to the University.
