History of the Geriatric Education Center of Pennsylvania

The Geriatric Education Center of Pennsylvania (GEC/PA) was established in 1985 and consisted of Temple University and the University of Pittsburgh. In 1991, Pennsylvania State University joined the consortium. More recently, educational programming has been expanded to include both urban and rural needs by addressing Healthy People 2010 initiatives. The educational programming now encompasses a broad range of professionals including medicine, dentistry, health professionals, podiatry and social work.

The GEC/PA is in part funded U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Public Services Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Health Professions

The GEC/PA is a member of the National Association of Geriatric Education Centers (NAGEC). NAGEC is a nation-wide network of 45 GECs whose mission is to promote better health care for older people through a public more informed on aging-related issues.
