The Department of Philosophy at Temple University embraces a broad spectrum of philosophical interests, emphasizing both Anglo-American and Continental approaches. Members of the department have made significant contributions in a number of diverse fields including aesthetics, philosophy of culture, the history of philosophy, continental philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, epistemology, philosophy of science, American philosophy, feminist philosophy, African American philosophy, philosophy of race, social and political philosophy, and Indian philosophy. The Department is home to The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism and The Journal of Social Philosophy. The Department is also involved in a scholarly exchange program in philosophy with institutions in Vietnam under the auspices of the Ford Foundation. 5 new people were hired for the fall of 2004 and an additional 2 new faculty have been hired for the fall of 2005.
The Department regularly augments its own faculty with visiting scholars from North America and abroad. In addition to the Monroe Beardsley Memorial Lecture in aesthetics, the Department sponsors a visiting speakers series as well as a work-in-progress series for graduate students. The Department is a founding member of The Greater Philadelphia Philosophy Consortium, a cooperative enterprise of 13 institutions in the greater Philadelphia region that sponsors conferences, discussion groups, tutorials, and other programs of interest to philosophers and the general public. The graduate student body is drawn not only from North America but from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. We currently have students in the graduate program on Ford Foundation, Rotary International, and Fulbright Foundation fellowships. At present there are about fifty graduate students in the Department.
