David Adamany became Temple University's eighth president on August 2, 2000. Prior to assuming the post as President of Wayne State University, a position he held from 1982 to 1997, Dr. Adamany was Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of Political Science at the University of Maryland. In 1999 after a brief retirement from the Wayne State Presidency, and at the request of Detroit's mayor and the Governor of Michigan, he became Interim CEO of the Detroit Public Schools. In that position he was responsible for major restructuring and reform of the school district.

A Wisconsin native, Dr. Adamany earned a bachelor's in government and a law degree from Harvard, and master's and doctoral degrees in political science at the University of Wisconsin. He has held teaching positions at Wesleyan University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and each of the universities in which he has held administrative positions. At Temple he is Laura Carnell Professor of Law and Political Science. His extensive background in public affairs was obtained during his service as a member of the Wisconsin Public Service Commission, chairman of the Wisconsin Council on Criminal Justice, chairman of the Wisconsin State Elections Board, secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, a member of the Michigan Civil Service Commission and a member of the U.S. Department of Education's National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity.

During the first year of his tenure at Temple, he prepared "The President's Self Study and Agenda," a broad set of initiatives designed to further strengthen Temple's academic offerings, student life, research programs, community relations and physical plant. Citing the accomplishments of the recent past, Dr. Adamany expressed confidence that "we can continue to mold Temple as a strong and vibrant educational institution that would do justice to its founder, Russell Conwell, and his vision of providing quality education for worthy students from all backgrounds."
