M.A. Program | Ph.D Program | Current Students
The Department of African American Studies offers graduate work leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
- The M.A. program seeks to answer the intellectual needs of the student and the particular needs of society that are not satisfied by a bachlors degree.
- The Ph.D. program is designed to ensure that the student satisfies the highest standards of excellence in preparation for the highest achievement in active scholarship and research in African American Studies. Thus, a student is prepared for a lifetime of intellectual inquiry that may be manifested in creative scholarship or careers in social, academic, civil, or international settings.

Two copies of an official transcript from each college attended
GRE scores
TOEFL (For Speakers of English as a Second Language)
A non-refundable application fee
Teaching Assistant Application (Doctoral Applicants Only)
Internal Teaching Assistant Application (Current Doctoral Students Only)
