Teaching Assistant Job Description
Primary Responsibility for Class
A Teaching Assistant who has the primary responsibility
for teaching an undergraduate course in the Department of African
American Studies is required to:
- be a graduate student in good standing;
- be well versed in African-centered theory and be
familiar with key scholars in the discipline a well as be able
to define and describe major terms and concepts that are consistent
with the discipline of AAS;
- participate in training programs/seminars provided
by DAAS, the College of Liberal Arts and the University as preparation
for teaching assignments;
- select relevant texts after consultation with the
graduate director and provide a comprehensive course description,
outline, and syllabus for the course before the first class meeting;
- grade papers and tests in a timely manner, offering
corrections and suggestions;
- maintain regular office hours, attend all classes,
and notify students and the Department if unable to meet a class;
- meet individually with students when necessary.
Assisting a Faculty Member
A Teaching Assistant who has been assigned to assist a
faculty member will be directed, supervised and evaluated by the
supervising instructor and must be a graduate student in good standing.
